Neva Edwards
Neva Augustina Edwards (born 1931) is an educator, lay preacher and former civil servant in Dominica. She served as Speaker of the House of Assembly of Dominica from 1993 to 1995. At the Dominica Social Centre, she has served as manager of four NGO programs, including the Early Childhood Program. Edwards has also been a lay preacher in the Methodist Methodism, also called the Methodist movement, is a group of historically related denominations of Protestant Christianity whose origins, doctrine and practice derive from the life and teachings of John Wesley. The Speaker of the House of Assembly of Dominica is responsible for the management and general administration of the House, ensuring that rules of procedure are followed. The Speaker is elected by the House of Assembly at its first sitting after a general election. A member of the House who is elected as Speaker can only vote to break ties (a casting vote). If someone outside the membership of the House is elected as Speaker, they become a member, but cannot cast an original or casting vote. Eugenia Charles
Dame Mary Eugenia Charles, (15 May 1919 – 6 September 2005) was a Dominican politician who was Prime Minister of Dominica from 21 July 1980 until 14 June 1995. The first female lawyer in Dominica, she was Dominica's first, and to date only, female prime minister. She was the second female prime minister in the Caribbean after Lucina da Costa of the Netherlands Antilles. She was the first female in the Americas to be elected in her own right as head of government. She served for the second longest period of any Dominican prime minister, and was the world's fourth longest-serving female Prime Minister, behind Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh, Sirimavo Bandaranaike of Sri Lanka and Indira Gandhi of India. Crispin Sorhaindo
Crispin Anselm Sorhaindo OBE (23 May 1931 – 10 January 2010) was the fourth President of Dominica. He served from 25 October 1993 until 5 October 1998. Early life Sorhaindo was born in 1931 in the village of Vieille Case. He attended the Vieille Case Government School, where his father served as the principal, and subsequently attended the Dominica Grammar School. After some years in the public service, he was sent to study abroad at the Overseas Service Course at Trinity College, Oxford, in 1956 and 1957, as well as the Royal Institute of Public Administration in 1963 and 1964, where he undertook the Public Finance Course. Osborne Symes
Frederick Osborne George Symes was a Dominican civil servant who served as Speaker of the House of Assembly of Dominica during United Workers Party administration from 1995 to 2000. Symes was born in Roseau on 31 August 1937. He worked as accountant by profession. He worked in the treasury department of Ministry of Finance of Dominica, and acted as cabinet secretary on occasion. He retired from the public service in 1993. In 1995, Symes was approached by UWP to be nominated as Speaker of the House of Assembly of Dominica, and he did accept the nomination. Marigot, Dominica
Marigot is the largest settlement of Saint Andrew Parish in northeastern Dominica. The village has a population of 2,676 people, and is home to a Fisheries Complex as well as the island's main airport. It is the birthplace of Wills Stratmore Stevens a local Educationist and B.O Robinson a former education officer.
