Neponset (Martin Station until 1900) is an unincorporated community in Monterey County, California. It is located along the Southern Pacific Railroad and California State Route 1 between Marina, California and Castroville, California, and northwest of Salinas, California, at an elevation of 23 feet (7 m). History Neponset was once a Southern Pacific Railroad station south of the Salinas River along the Monterey Branch Line. The station was near Castroville, the self-proclaimed "Artichoke Capital of the World," It was on the boundary of Rancho Rincón de las Salinas at the corner of the marshland. Neponset is primarily undeveloped and used as agricultural land. A branch line can be seen at Neponset along the abandoned Monterey Branch line. EMD SD7
An SD7 is a 6-axle diesel locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division between May 1951 and November 1953. It had an EMD 567B 16-cylinder engine producing for its six traction motors. 188 were built for United States railroads. This was the first model in EMD's SD ''(Special Duty)'' series of locomotives, a lengthened B-B GP7 with a C-C truck arrangement. The two extra axles and traction motors are useful in heavy, low speed freight service. EMD continues to produce SD series locomotives to this day. Gilroy is a city in Northern California's Santa Clara County, south of Morgan Hill and north of San Benito County. Gilroy is the southernmost city in the San Francisco Bay Area, with a population of 56,766 as of the 2019 U.S. Census Projections.
