Neochori Falaisias
Neochori Falaisias ( el, Νεοχώρι Φαλαισίας) is a mountain village in the municipal unit of Falaisia, Arcadia (regional unit), Arcadia, Greece. It is situated in the northern part of the Taygetus mountains, at about 1200 m elevation. It is 3 km east of Dyrrachio, 4 km west of Georgitsi, 17 km southeast of Leontari, Arcadia, Leontari and 26 km southeast of Megalopoli. In 2011 Neochori had a population of 59. It suffered damage from the 2007 Greek forest fires. Megalopoli ( el, Μεγαλόπολη) is a town in the southwestern part of the regional unit of Arcadia, southern Greece. It is located in the same site as ancient Megalopolis ( grc, Μεγαλόπολις, literally ''large/great city''). When it was founded in 371 BC, it was the first large urbanization in rustic Arcadia. Its theater had a capacity of 20,000 visitors, making it one of the largest ancient Greek theaters. Today Megalopoli has several schools, shops, churches, hotels and other services. The population of Megalopoli in 2011 was 5,779 residents. Falaisia ( el, Φαλαισία, before 1918: Μπούρα - ''Boura'') is a village and a former municipality in southwestern Arcadia, Peloponnese, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Megalopoli, of which it is a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 274.926 km2. The seat of the municipality was in Leontari, 5 km northwest of the village Falaisia. The municipal unit Falaisia is located in the northern foothills of the Taygetus mountains, south of Megalopoli and north of Kalamata. Taygetus
The Taygetus, Taugetus, Taygetos or Taÿgetus ( el, Ταΰγετος, Taygetos) is a mountain range on the Peloponnese peninsula in Southern Greece. The highest mountain of the range is Mount Taygetus, also known as "Profitis Ilias", or "Prophet Elias" (Elijah). The name is one of the oldest recorded in Europe, appearing in the Odyssey. In classical mythology, it was associated to the nymph Taygete and it was named after her. Dyrrachio ( el, Δυρράχιο) is a mountain village in the municipal unit of Falaisia, southwestern Arcadia, Greece. Dyrrachio had a population of 299 in 2001. It is considered a traditional settlement and is situated at an altitude of in the Taygetos mountains of the Peloponnese. Georgitsi ( el, Γεωργίτσι) is a village in the Taygetus mountain range 28 km away from the city of Sparta in southern Greece. Leontari ( el, Λεοντάρι, meaning ''Lion'' in English) is a village and a community in the southwestern part of Arcadia, Greece, seat of the former municipality of Falaisia. It is situated on a hillside, 6 km east of Paradeisia, 9 km northwest of Kamara and 9 km south of Megalopoli. The community consists of the villages Leontari (population 257 in 2011), Gavria (pop. 9), Kalyvia (pop. 11), Kamaritsa (pop. 22) and Kotsiridi (pop. 22). 2007 Greek Forest Fires
The 2007 Greek forest fires were a series of massive forest fires that broke out in several areas across Greece throughout the summer of 2007. The most destructive and lethal infernos broke out on 23 August, expanded rapidly and raged out of control until 27 August, until they were finally put out in early September. The fires mainly affected western and southern Peloponnese as well as southern Euboea. The death toll in August alone stood at 67 people. In total 84 people lost their lives because of the fires, including several fire fighters. Some of these firestorms are believed to be the result of arson while others were merely the result of negligence. Hot temperatures, including three consecutive heat waves of over 40 °C (105 °F), and severe drought rendered the 2007 summer unprecedented in modern Greek history.
