Arcadia (regional Unit)
Arcadia ( el, Αρκαδία, ''Arkadía'' ) is one of the regional units of Greece. It is part of the administrative region of Peloponnese. It is in the central and eastern part of the Peloponnese peninsula. It takes its name from the mythological figure Arcas. In Greek mythology, it was the home of the god Pan. In European Renaissance arts, Arcadia was celebrated as an unspoiled, harmonious wilderness. Geography Arcadia is a rural, mountainous regional unit comprising about 18% of the land area of the Peloponnese peninsula. It is the peninsula's largest regional unit. According to the 2011 census, it has about 86,000 inhabitants; its capital, Tripoli, has about 30,000 residents in the city proper, and about 47,500 total in the greater metropolitan area. Arcadia consists partly of farmland, and to a larger extent grassland and degenerated shrubland. Athinaio ( el, Αθήναιο; before 1928 , ) is a village and a community in the municipal unit of Valtetsi, Arcadia, Greece. It is situated on a hillside, north of the river Alfeios. iN 2011 Athinaio had a population of 82 for the village and 95 for the community, which includes the village Marmaria. Athinaio is 2 km southwest of Asea, 10 km east of Megalopoli and 16 km southwest of Tripoli. Astros, Greece
Astros (Greek: Άστρος ) is a town near the Argolic Gulf in the northeast Peloponnese in eastern Arcadia. It is the seat of North Kynouria municipality (Greek: Βόρεια Κυνουρία) and is accessible by the road connecting Corinth and Argos to the south. Its port, Paralio Astros lies 4 km to the northeast of the inland town. Asea, Greece
Asea ( el, Ασέα; before 1927: Κανδρέβα ''Kandreva'') is a village and a community in Arcadia, Greece, in the Peloponnese peninsula. Asea is situated on a hillside at about 800 m elevation. It is 2 km northeast of Athinaio, 11 km east of Megalopoli and 14 km southwest of Tripoli. Asea was the seat of the municipality of Valtetsi. The community Asea consists of the villages Asea (population 85 in 2011) and Kato Asea (pop. 47) which is the more affluent and cosmopolitan of the two villages. Although Asea has only about 200 permanent inhabitants, its natural environment and archeological sites attract weekend and summer visitors. However, an infestation of arachnids in 2015 has decreased tourism in recent years. Anthochori, Arcadia
Anthochori ( el, Ανθοχώρι meaning "flower village", before 1927: Καρούμπαλι - ''Karoumpali'') was a settlement in Arcadia, Greece. Anthochori was demolished from 2006 to 2008 in order to provide the Megalopoli Power Plant with lignite (brown coal). Geography Anthochori was located about 3 km south of the town of Megalopoli, in the valley of the Alfeios river. Prior to the large scale exploitation of lignite in open-pit mines, the area consisted mostly of farmlands. Neighboring villages were Vrysoules to the east, Gefyra to the southeast and Tripotamo to the southwest. The Greek National Road 7 (Kalamata - Megalopoli - Tripoli) ran east of Anthochori. Anthochori had a station on the short branch railway line from Lefktro, on the Tripoli-Kalamata railway line, to Megalopoli. Ano Doliana
Ano Doliana (Ano meaning "upper", el, Άνω Δολιανά, ) or simply Doliana, is a stone-built mountainous village in the municipality of North Kynouria, in eastern Arcadia, Greece. As of 2011 it had 90 inhabitants. It is a protected traditional settlement. It used to be the main residence of the settlers, but nowadays only a handful of them stay throughout the year, as most use it as their summer residence and instead overwinter in Kato Doliana because of the milder climate. In recent years it has emerged as a relatively popular tourist destination, with a significant number of visitors, especially during the autumn and winter season weekends.
