Neil Houston
Neil William "Woody" Houston (born January 19, 1957) is a Canadian curler. He is a and a 1986 Labatt Brier champion. He played at the 1988 Winter Olympics when curling was a demonstration sport, Canadian men's team won bronze medal. During the early 1990s, Houston worked in sports facility management in Leduc, Whitecourt and Fort Saskatchewan. In 1995, Houston moved to Ottawa where he worked for the Canadian Curling Association as director of domestic development. After 13 years with the CCA, Houston moved to British Columbia in 2007 to become venue and sport manager for Curling at the 2010 Winter Olympics. Curling At The 2010 Winter Olympics
The curling competition of the 2010 Olympics was held at Vancouver Olympic/Paralympic Centre in Vancouver. It is the fifth time that curling was on the Olympic program, after having been staged in 1924, 1998, 2002 and 2006. For the 2010 Winter Olympics the competition followed the same format that was used during the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics, with 10 teams playing a round robin tournament, from which the top four teams advance to the semi-finals. The women's competition concluded on Friday, February 26, 2010. In the bronze medal match, the Chinese team made history by becoming the first team from Asia to win an Olympic curling medal. The gold medal match was one of the closest medal games in Olympic competition. Michael N. Chernoff (born c. 1936) is a Canadian curler and geologist from West Vancouver, British Columbia. He is a and a . Personal life Chernoff has a degree in geological engineering from Queen's University at Kingston. He was born in Kamsack, Saskatchewan. He is married to Dorine. After graduating from Queens, Chernoff worked as a geologist, conducting field studies across Canada for several oil and gas companies including California Standard, Pinnacle Petroleum, and Ulster Petroleum. Canadian Junior Curling Championships
The Canadian Junior Curling Championships is an annual curling tournament held to determine the best junior-level curling team in Canada. Junior level curlers must be under the age of 21 as of June 30 in the year prior to the tournament. The event began in 1950 as the National Schoolboys Championship, and all members of a team had to attend the same high school. Efforts to establish the event were led by Ken Watson, Maurice Smith and others. From 1950 to 1957, teams played for the Victor Sifton Trophy. Sifton's newspaper chain was the sponsor of the event during this time. From 1958 to 1975 the event was sponsored by Pepsi and was known as the Pepsi Schoolboys, becoming the Pepsi Juniors in 1976. At that time, the age limit of the event was adjusted to match the eligibility for the World Junior Curling Championships which began in 1975. Kelly Stearne
John Timothy Kelly Stearne (July 2, 1958 – May 9, 2016) was a Canadian curler from Calgary. He played lead for the infamous Paul Gowsell rink which won two World Junior Curling Championships. As a member of the Gowsell rink, Stearne won Canadian Junior Curling Championships for Alberta in 1976 and 1978. This qualified the team to represent Canada at the 1976 and 1978 World Junior Championships, respectively. In both events, the team captured gold. After graduating from juniors, the team went on to win the Alberta Men's Championship in 1980 and represented Alberta at the 1980 Labatt Brier in their hometown of Calgary. The team finished in third place and never returned to the Brier. Paul Gowsell
Paul Gowsell is a Canadian curler from Calgary, Alberta. Gowsell hit the men's competitive curling world by storm in the late 1970s with his unorthodox antics. Playing career Gowsell was the first skip to win two World Junior Curling Championships. He won his first World Junior championship in 1976, defeating Sweden's Jan Ullsten. He repeated in 1978 by defeating Sweden again, this time skipped by Thomas Håkansson. Gowsell was the third skip to win two Canadian Junior Men's Championships which he did in 1975 and 1978. After juniors, Gowsell was very successful on the cash 'spiel circuit, but played in just one Brier. When he was in his early 20s, Gowsell took his Alberta championship team to an 8-3 record at the 1980 Labatt Brier, and lost to Al Hackner's Northern Ontario team in the semi-final. Brent A. Syme (born October 23, 1956) is a Canadian curler. He is a and a 1986 Labatt Brier champion. He played at the 1988 Winter Olympics when curling was a demonstration sport, Canadian men's team won bronze medal. Syme retired from competitive curling in 1988 due to work commitments. Outside of curling, Syme is a businessman and was the general manager of the Southern Alberta Curling Association.
