Nehemiah Dyer
Nehemiah Mayo Dyer (aka. N. Mayo Dyer; February 19, 1839 – January 27, 1910) was a Rear admiral (United States), rear admiral in United States Navy, who served during the American Civil War and Spanish–American War. He was one of the few individuals to have served in both the Battle of Mobile Bay during the Civil War and the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish–American War. Biography Nehemiah Mayo Dyer was born in Provincetown, Massachusetts, to Henry and Sally (Mayo) Dyer. He was educated in the public schools. He "followed the sea" from 1854 to 1859. He had mercantile employment from 1859 to 1861. Civil War service With the outbreak of the American Civil War, he enlisted 13th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, 13th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment in July 1861. USS ''Kennebec'' was a built for the U.S. Navy following the outbreak of the American Civil War. She was named for the Kennebec River. ''Kennebec'' was launched 5 October 1861 by G. W. Port Royal
Port Royal is a village located at the end of the Palisadoes, at the mouth of Kingston Harbour, in southeastern Jamaica. Founded in 1494 by the Spanish, it was once the largest city in the Caribbean, functioning as the centre of shipping and commerce in the Caribbean Sea by the latter half of the 17th century. It was destroyed by an earthquake on 7 June 1692, which had an accompanying tsunami, leading to the establishment of Kingston, which is now the largest city in Jamaica. Dispatch boats were small boats, and sometimes large ships, tasked to carry military dispatches from ship to ship or from ship to shore or, in some cases from shore to shore. Dispatch boats were employed when other means of transmitting a message was not possible or safe or as quick. Charlestown Navy Yard
The Boston Navy Yard, originally called the Charlestown Navy Yard and later Boston Naval Shipyard, was one of the oldest shipbuilding facilities in the United States Navy.
