Neerijnen
Neerijnen () is a village and former municipality in the Netherlands. It is about south of Utrecht and some north of 's-Hertogenbosch. On 1 January 2019, it merged with Geldermalsen and Lingewaal to form the new municipality of West Betuwe. History It was first mentioned in 996 as in Ine. The etymology in unclear. It is neer (lower) in comparison with Opijnen (upper). The village developed as an ''esdorp'' perpendicular to the dike of the Waal. Neerijnen Castle was built around 1350 and formed a single estate with Waardenburg Castle. In 1574, it was under siege by William the Silent and mainly destroyed. The castle was rebuilt in 1627. In 1980, it served as town hall. In 2019, Neerijnen merged into West Betuwe, and the castle was put up for sale. In 1840, it was home to 294 people. The Dutch Reformed Church was built in 1865. Haaften
Haaften is a village in the Dutch province of Gelderland, on the northern shore of the river Waal, about opposite Zaltbommel. It is a part of the municipality of West Betuwe, and lies about 25 km south of Utrecht. From 1818 to 1977 Haaften was the main village and seat of the town hall of the eponymous municipality, which also comprised the smaller villages of Hellouw to the west and Tuil to the east, all on the northern bank of the river Waal. On 1 January 1978 it was merged with the Neerijnen municipality of which it formed the westernmost part. In 2019 Neerijnen merged with several other municipalities to form West Betuwe. Ophemert
Ophemert is a village in the Dutch province of Gelderland. It is a part of the municipality of West Betuwe, and lies about 5 km south of Tiel. Ophemert was a separate municipality between 1818 and 1978, when it was merged with Neerijnen. History It was first mentioned between 800 and 850 as Hamaritda, and means stone. The origin is not clear, since Ophemert is located along the Waal. Ophemert developed as a stretched out ''esdorp'' along the river. In the 14th century, the castle Huis Ophemert was constructed to the north of the village. The castle received its current shape around 1700. The Dutch Reformed Church dates from the early 16th century. It was heavily damaged during World War II and was restored in neo-gothic style around 1955. In 1840, Ophemert was home to 985 people. Opijnen
Opijnen is a village in the Dutch province of Gelderland. It is a part of the municipality of West Betuwe, and lies about 10 km southwest of Tiel. Opijnen was a separate municipality until 1818, when it changed its name to Est en Opijnen. History It was first mentioned in 1265 as Opynen, and means upstream as compared to Neerijnen. Waardenburg
Waardenburg is a village in the Dutch province of Gelderland. It is a part of the municipality of West Betuwe, and is located about 13 km west of Tiel. Waardenburg was a separate municipality until 1978, when it was merged with Neerijnen. History It was first mentioned in 1108 as Werden, and means "fortified place near water". Waardenburg developed as an ''esdorp'' perpendicular to the dike of the Waal. Waardenburg Castle was founded in 1265 as a wooden fortification. It developed into a castle with three towers, a ring wall and a gate. In 1574, it was taken by William the Silent causing the destruction of the west and south side. In 1703, the ruins were cleared.
