Nechama Hendel
Nechama 'Nama' Hendel ( he, נחמה הנדל; 22 August 1936 – 30 September 1998) was an Israeli singer. She began in the IDF Nahal music troupe, and came out of the Tsahal music scene in the 1950s, first in the duet "Ran veNama" – with Ran Eliran – then later as a solo act. In 1958, Ran Eliran and Hendel were introduced to American audiences by their appearance on ''The Ed Sullivan Show'' performing " Tzena Tzena". Hendel possessed one of the most beautiful voices in Israel. She became world-famous with her smash hit "Machar" ("Tomorrow")- composed by Naomi Shemer featured on the " Jerusalem of Gold" album. She recorded many more of Shemer's songs. Hendel recorded not only in Hebrew, but in Yiddish as well and was one of the artists included on a Yiddish compilation called " Songs of The Vilna Ghetto" for CBS Records in Israel. Ran Eliran
Ran Eliran ( he, רן אלירן; born December 16, 1934), known as "Israel's Ambassador of Song," is an Israeli singer. Biography Ran Eliran (Menachem Leizerovich) was born in Haifa, British Mandate of Palestine. He was the middle child among three siblings. His Polish-Jewish parents ran a bakery. In the late 1950s, he formed one of the first Israeli folk-style duos, Ran and Nama with Nechama Hendel. In 1958, Ed Sullivan visited Israel looking for young performers to appear on a special show celebrating Israel's tenth anniversary. Eliran and Hendel were the finalists. While the name Ran was not a problem for English speakers, they could not pronounce Nechama, so the duo became known as "Ran and Nama." "Tzena, Tzena, Tzena" (), sometimes "Tzena, Tzena", is a song, written in 1941 in Hebrew. Its music is by Issachar Miron (a.k.a. Stefan Michrovsky), a Polish emigrant in what was then the British Mandate of Palestine (now Israel), and the lyrics are by . History Miron, born in 1919, left Poland at the age of 19 in the late 1930s, thus avoiding the Holocaust. In 1941, while serving in the Jewish Brigade of the British forces, he composed the melody for lyrics written by Chagiz. The song became popular in Palestine and was played on the Kol Yisrael radio service. Julius Grossman, who did not know who composed the song, wrote the so-called third part of "Tzena" circa November 1946. Naomi Shemer
Naomi Shemer ( he, נעמי שמר; July 13, 1930 – June 26, 2004) was a leading Israeli musician and songwriter, hailed as the "first lady of Israeli song and poetry." Her song " Yerushalayim Shel Zahav" ("Jerusalem of Gold"), written in 1967, became an unofficial second anthem after Israel won the Six-Day War that year and reunited Jerusalem. Early life Naomi Sapir () was born to Rivka and Meir Sapir (Sapirov) in kvutzat Kinneret, an Israeli kibbutz her parents had helped found, on the shores of the Sea of Galilee. In the 1950s she served in the Israeli Defense Force's Nahal entertainment troupe, and studied music at the Rubin Academy in Jerusalem, and in Tel Aviv with Paul Ben-Haim, Abel Ehrlich, Ilona Vincze-Kraus and Josef Tal. Jerusalem Of Gold
"Jerusalem of Gold" ( he, ירושלים של זהב, ''Yerushalayim Shel Zahav'') is an Israeli song written by Naomi Shemer. Often contrasted with the official anthem Hatikva, the original song described the Jewish people's 2,000-year longing to return to Jerusalem. Shemer added a final verse after the Six-Day War to celebrate Jerusalem's re-unification. History Naomi Shemer wrote the original song for the Israeli Song Festival (it was not in competition but had been commissioned by the Mayor of Jerusalem, Teddy Kollek), held on 15 May 1967, the night after Israel's nineteenth Independence Day.
