Route description Nebraska Highway 53 begins one mile (1.6 km) east of Gilead at U.S. 136. It proceeds north through farmland and crosses the Little Blue River (Kansas/Nebraska), Little Blue River before entering Alexandria, Nebraska, Alexandria. From Alexandria, it continues north until NE 4, where it ends. History Highway 53 was originally numbered Highway 76 until January 1, 1975, when it was redesignated to avoid confusion with Interstate 76 (west), Interstate 76 (formerly Interstate 80S). Beatrice () is a city in and the county seat of Gage County, Nebraska, United States. Its population was 12,459 at the 2010 census. Beatrice is located approximately 25 miles south of Lincoln on the Big Blue River and is surrounded by agricultural country. History Gage County was one of the 19 counties originally established by the Nebraska Territorial Legislature in 1854. At the time of its establishment, there were no settlers living within its boundaries. Daykin, Nebraska
Daykin is a village in Jefferson County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 157 at the 2020 census. History Daykin was founded by John Daykin, a train conductor and stonemason from Illinois. In 1869, John Daykin purchased land in Jefferson County, Nebraska that would later become Daykin. Besides founding the town, he remains most recognized for conducting the train that returned Abraham Lincoln's body to Springfield, Illinois. Daykin at one point had a population that reached near 300 people. The town held businesses such as a doctor's office, a butcher, laundromat, veterinarian, hotel, blacksmith, furniture store, jewelry store and many more. The Jefferson County Bank was built in 1887, and has been in continuous operation since then, surviving the market crash of the 1930s. Thayer County is a county in the U.S. state of Nebraska. As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was 5,034. The county was created in 1856 and originally named Jefferson County. It was organized in 1870-1871 and renamed for General and Governor John Milton Thayer. In the Nebraska license plate system, Thayer County is represented by the prefix 32 (it had the thirty-second-largest number of vehicles registered in the state when the license plate system was established in 1922). Its western terminus is at an intersection with US 6 and US 34 southwest of Atlanta. Its eastern terminus is at an intersection with US 75 north of Dawson. The Little Blue River is a river in southern Nebraska and northern Kansas in the United States, that was used by Pony Express horseback riders. Ridgelines of this historic watershed defined the wagon train routes first used by Oregon Trail emigrants. Description The Little Blue rises just south of Minden in Kearney County, Nebraska.
