Nebraska Highway 18
Nebraska Highway 18 is a highway in southwestern Nebraska. It has a western terminus in Curtis at Nebraska Highway 23. Its eastern terminus is at an intersection with U.S. Highway 283 south of Elwood. The easternmost portion of the highway is a gravel road. Route description Nebraska Highway 18 begins in Curtis at an intersection with Nebraska Highway 23. It goes southeast out of Curtis and goes through Stockville. It goes east from Stockville, then turns south for a brief distance. It turns east, and becomes a gravel road for the rest of its route. Except for one brief southward turn, the highway continues due east until it ends at U.S. Highway 283 between Elwood and Arapahoe. Curtis is a city in Frontier County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 939 at the 2010 census. Curtis describes itself as "Nebraska's Easter City", and presents an annual pageant on Palm Sunday. The Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture is located in Curtis. History Curtis was laid out in 1886, soon after the railroad was extended to that point. The community has the name of a trapper who operated in the area. Curtis is home to Medicine Valley Schools, which was formed in 1969. The school name is derived from its location in the Medicine Creek Valley. Elwood is a village and the county seat of Gosper County, Nebraska, United States. It is part of the Lexington, Nebraska Micropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 707 at the 2010 census. History Elwood was platted in 1885 when the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad was extended to that point. It was named for Elwood Thomas, a homesteader. Frontier County is a county in the U.S. state of Nebraska. As of the 2010 United States Census, the population was 2,756. Its county seat is Stockville. In the Nebraska license plate system, Frontier County is represented by the prefix 60 (it had the sixtieth-largest number of vehicles registered in the county when the license plate system was established in 1922). Gosper County is a county located in the U.S. state of Nebraska. As of the 2020 United States census, the population was 1,893. Its county seat is Elwood. The county was formed in 1873, and was organized in 1881. It was named for John J. Gosper, a Nebraska Secretary of State. Gosper County is part of the Lexington, NE Micropolitan Statistical Area. Nebraska Highway 23 is a highway in southwestern Nebraska, United States. Its western terminus is on the Colorado border at Venango, where the highway continues west as Colorado State Highway 23. The eastern terminus of NE 23 is at Holdrege at an intersection with U.S. Routes 6 and 34. Route description Nebraska Highway 23 begins at the Colorado border at Venango. It passes northeasterly through farmland towards Grant, where it meets Nebraska Highway 61. After a brief concurrency, NE 23 and NE 61 separate and NE 23 continues east. Stockville is a village in Frontier County, Nebraska, United States. The population was 25 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Frontier County. History A band of Oglala Dakota called the Cut-off Oglala took up residence near Stockville in 1870. In the same year white cattlemen began to settle near Medicine Creek. In fall 1872, the Oglala chief Whistler and two more Oglala were murdered, probably by white bison hunters, and in 1873-1874 the Oglala departed the valley to reside on a reservation. Stockville was founded in 1872.
