Neale Publishing Company
The Neale Publishing Company was an American book publisher active between 1894 and 1933. It was a prolific publisher of books about the American Civil War and the Southern United States. History The Neale Publishing Company was founded by Walter Neale in 1894. Neale, who had previously worked as a writer, established the company in Washington, D.C. and was one of only two employees. Neale began publishing books in 1896. In 1899 the company published a journal, ''Conservative Review'', but the periodical lasted only two years. It was enough, however, to kick-start the rest of Neale's publishing operation, and forty books were published between 1900 and 1901. Neale incorporated the company in March 1901. It began to rapidly expand and in 1902 was officially listed in the '' Publishers Trade List Annual''. American Civil War
The American Civil War (April 12, 1861 – May 26, 1865; also known by other names) was a civil war in the United States. William Cabell Bruce
William Cabell Bruce (March 12, 1860May 9, 1946) was an American politician and Pulitzer Prize-winning writer who represented the State of Maryland in the United States Senate from 1923 to 1929. Background Bruce was born in Charlotte County, Virginia to Charles and Sarah Alexander (Seddon) Bruce (a sister of James Seddon), and received an academic education at Norwood High School and College in Nelson County, Virginia. He later attended the University of Virginia where he bested Woodrow Wilson in both a highly contested formal debate and an essay competition. In 1882, he graduated from the University of Maryland School of Law. Career Bruce was admitted to the Maryland bar the same year and commenced law practice in Baltimore, Maryland. Carlisle ( , ; from xcb, Caer Luel) is a city that lies within the Northern English county of Cumbria, south of the Scottish border at the confluence of the rivers Eden, Caldew and Petteril. It is the administrative centre of the City of Carlisle district which, (along with Cumbria County Council) will be replaced by Cumberland Council in April 2023. The city became an established settlement during the Roman Empire to serve forts on Hadrian's Wall. ''Recollections of a California Pioneer'' is a memoir by Carlisle S. Abbott. It was published by The Neale Publishing Company in 1917. The book details Abbott's life and journey along the Oregon Trail to California, along with some discussion of his life in California and the early politics of Salinas Valley. Born in Canada in 1828, Abbott ran away from home as a teenage, traveled across the Great Plains twice, worked as a miner, and lived alongside the Apache people for a time. He was a member of the first recorded crossing of the Hastings Cutoff in 1850. Abbotts Lagoon in the Point Reyes National Seashore is named after him. Abbott raised dairy cattle and established a narrow gauge railroad. He also established a hotel and served in the California Assembly.
