Ndanda Secondary School Alumni
Ndanda is a town in Mtwara Region of southern Tanzania. Ndanda is home to Ndanda High School, an A level all-boys boarding school with approximately 1200 students. The school was created by the Benedictines of Ndanda Abbey but it is now a Government school. Ndanda has the advantage of being on the road which links the coastal towns of Lindi and Mtwara with Masasi which was given a tarred surface before 1980. Another advantage is the existence of a river which supplies water to the town throughout the year. During the normal dry season of at least five months the water continues to flow from springs at the edge of the Makonde Plateau. Ndanda has a major hospital which was also built by the Benedictines but now has some Government support. The Abbey has busy workshops for vehicle maintenance, construction, electrical installation, shoemaking, tailoring, metalwork, plumbing, carpentry and furniture making. Mtwara Region
Mtwara Region (''Mkoa wa Mtwara'' in Swahili) is one of Tanzania's 31 administrative regions. The regional capital is the municipality of Mtwara. Mtwara Region is home to one of the most infuluencial people in Tanzania, the Makonde. Mtwara is home to Tanzania's 4th president Benjamin Mkapa and is home to a number of influential artists. The boundary with Mozambique to the south is formed by the Ruvuma River. To the west, Mtwara is bordered by Ruvuma Region, to the north by Lindi Region, and to the east is the Indian Ocean. Mtwara Region is home for being the nation's largest producer of Cashew nuts. As of 2021,there are 31 regions of Tanzania which are divided into 184 districts (Swahili: wilaya). In 2016, Songwe Region was created from the western part of Mbeya Region. The districts are each administered by a district council. Cities are separately administered by their own councils, and while administratively within a region, are not considered to be located within a district. Masasi
Masasi is one of the six districts of the Mtwara Region of Tanzania. Ndanda Abbey
The Abbey of Our Lady Help of Christians, Ndanda, Tanzania, is a Benedictine monastery of the Ottilien Congregation, Congregation of the Missionary Benedictines of Saint Ottilien. Established in 1906 as a mission station in German East Africa, the monastery is currently home to 71 monks. On 25 March 2021 the community elected Fr. Christian Temu OSB its 6th abbot. History Arrival to Africa The first Missionary Benedictines arrived in German East Africa in 1887, following the creation of the Apostolic prefect, Prefecture Apostolic of South Zanzibar. A first mission, established at Pugu near Dar-es-Salaam, ended in disaster, as three missionaries were killed and four kidnapped during the anti-colonial Bushiri uprising.
