The Guns Of Navarone (novel)
''The Guns of Navarone'' is a 1957 novel about the Second World War by Scottish writer Alistair MacLean that was made into the film '' The Guns of Navarone'' in 1961. The story concerns the efforts of an Allied commando team to destroy a seemingly impregnable German fortress that threatens Allied naval ships in the Aegean Sea and prevents over 1,200 isolated British Army soldiers from being rescued. The Greek island of Navarone does not exist and the plot is fictional, but the story takes place within the real historical context of the 1943 Dodecanese campaign. ''The Guns of Navarone'' brings together elements that would characterise much of MacLean's subsequent works: tough, competent, worldly men as main characters; frequent but non-graphic violence; betrayal of the hero(es) by a trusted associate; and extensive use of the sea and other dangerous environments as settings. Its three principal characters – New Zealand mountaineer-turned-commando Keith Mallory, American ...

Navarone Island
Navarone Island is a fictional island portrayed in a novel by Alistair MacLean entitled ''The Guns of Navarone''. The novel was made into a movie, but the film changed some of the geography of the island. Although Navarone does not exist, its history is based on the real history of the Aegean Islands of Greece. Setting and terrain MacLean not only invented the island of Navarone, but he also created a whole setting for it in the eastern Aegean. In the novel, Navarone forms part of the Sporades Islands group. Four miles to the east of Navarone's main town lies mainland Turkey. North of the island, the Turkish coast juts out into a sharp promontory, the fictional Cape Demirci. The promontory is rimmed with rock but dimpled with coves of white sand beaches. Beyond the coast rise the towering Anatolian mountains. About sixteen miles north of the cape, according to the book, is the island of Kheros, which features importantly in the novel. To the west is the fictional Lerad ...

Guns Of Navarone (song)
"Guns Of Navarone" is a song and single by Jamaican group The Skatalites. The music was written by Dimitri Tiomkin for the 1961 film of the same name, the soundtrack of which was released on 1 January 1961. Lyrics were added by Paul Francis Webster. AllMusic describes the song as a masterpiece of the ska genre with its feeling of optimism with a "jubilant harmonic horn chorus". The vocalist is Roland Alphonso, with Lee "Scratch" Perry who provided various shouts on the track. The rhythm section of drummer Lloyd Knibb and bassist, Lloyd Brevett provided sharp rim shots and a "thumping bass". Originally released in Jamaica on Coxsone Dodd's ''Muzik City'' label in 1965 under Alphonso's name, it was re-released the same year in the UK on Island using a slightly shorter edit. However, it did not appear in the UK charts until 1967, making number 36 in the spring of that year and staying on the charts for six weeks. It was The Skatalites' only hit in the UK. The Specials version The so ...

Force 10 From Navarone (novel)
''Force 10 from Navarone'' is a World War II novel by Scottish author Alistair MacLean. It serves as a sequel to MacLean's 1957 '' The Guns of Navarone'', but follows the events of the 1961 film adaptation of the same name. It features various characters from the film who were not in the book, and leaves out major characters from the book. Introduction ''Force 10 From Navarone'' begins immediately after the events portrayed in ''The Guns of Navarone'', with Mallory and Miller assigned on a new mission code-named "Force 10". Mallory and Miller return to Navarone to recruit their comrade Stavros (who stayed behind in the film, but not in the book). They are joined by three young British Royal Marine Commandos, and are parachuted into Nazi-occupied, frozen, war-torn Yugoslavia. There they attempt to aid the Yugoslav Partisans in their battle against the Nazi German occupiers and their Chetnik collaborators. As with all MacLean novels, the true mission is secret. Everyone, i ...

Force 10 From Navarone (film)
''Force 10 from Navarone'' is a 1978 war film loosely based on Alistair MacLean's 1968 novel of the same name. It is a sequel to the 1961 film '' The Guns of Navarone''. The parts of Mallory and Miller are played by Robert Shaw (who died before the film was released), and Edward Fox, succeeding in the roles originally portrayed by Gregory Peck and David Niven. It was directed by Guy Hamilton and also stars Harrison Ford, Carl Weathers, Barbara Bach, Franco Nero (in a "plastic surgery" role previously played by Tutte Lemkow), and Richard Kiel. The film gets its title from the Alistair MacLean book of the same name, but bears little resemblance to the narrative of the novel. The differences are so apparent that MacLean would go on to loosely adapt part of the screenplay into his 1982 book '' Partisans''. Plot In 1943, Major Keith Mallory and Sergeant Donovan "Dusty" Miller from British Commandos are sent to find and eliminate Nicolai, a German spy who previously betrayed th ...

Navarone (band)
Navarone is a Dutch alternative rock band, formed in Nijmegen in 2008. Biography Navarone originated as a musical project between lead singer Merijn van Haren and guitarist Kees Lewiszong. In their early years, still performing under the name Overthrow, they caught the attention of Golden Earring, eventually leading to a series of opening acts for their shows. Golden Earring's frontman Barry Hay came up with the idea of renaming their band to The Guns of Navarone. Even though the name was well received, the band thought the resemblance with the name Guns N' Roses was too close, so eventually they settled with the name Navarone. Their first EP was recorded and released in 2009, which led them to the final round of The Next Best Band contest, airplay on 3FM in Rob Stenders' Indecent Proposal, a number-one notation on KX-Radio, and a series of live performances, including one on Paaspop. The band stayed under the radar for a period of two years as their band members were granted the o ...
