Naval Support Activity Mechanicsburg
Naval Support Activity Mechanicsburg is an naval supply depot just outside of Mechanicsburg in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. Largely industrial, and home to over 150 warehouses containing of storage space and other buildings, it is the headquarters of the Naval Supply Systems Command. It is also the parent installation of Naval Support Activity Philadelphia and the Philadelphia Navy Yard Annex, which share the same commanding officer. History By the early 1940s, with the United States engaged in World War II, it became clear that the Navy needed inland supply depots. With the advent of the “Five Ocean” Navy, overcrowded coastal Navy facilities were in need of relief. The Mechanicsburg area was one of five locations chosen for new depots. Philadelphia Navy Yard
The Philadelphia Naval Shipyard was an important naval shipyard of the United States for almost two centuries. Philadelphia's original navy yard, begun in 1776 on Front Street and Federal Street in what is now the Pennsport section of the city, was the first naval shipyard of the United States. It was replaced by a new, much larger yard developed around facilities begun in 1871 on League Island, at the confluence of the Delaware and Schuylkill rivers. The Navy Yard expansion stimulated the development over time of residential and businesses in South Philadelphia, where many shipyard workers lived. Enola Yard
Enola Yard is a large rail yard located in East Pennsboro Township, Pennsylvania, along the western shore of the Susquehanna River at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Built in 1905 and expanded through the 1930s, Enola was the world's largest freight yard in 1956. It remains in operation today, though it has long since been eclipsed in size and traffic, first by Conway Yard outside Pittsburgh and later by Bailey Yard in Nebraska. Cumberland County is a county in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. As of the 2020 census, the population was 259,469. Its county seat is Carlisle.
