Naval Air Station Halifax
Naval Air Station Halifax, also NAS Halifax, was a United States Navy Naval Air Station located in Eastern Passage, Nova Scotia, Canada. History NAS Halifax was established in August 1918 by Richard E. Byrd in the months following the United States' entry into World War I. United States Naval Aviation briefly operated the base on the shores of Halifax Harbour, adjacent to RCAF Station Dartmouth, to stage its Curtiss HS-2L flying boats used in coastal and anti-submarine patrols along North America's eastern seaboard. NAS Halifax was transferred to the Royal Canadian Naval Air Service (RCNAS) at the end of World War I and the facility was renamed HMCS Shearwater. The flying boat facility was merged with the land-based airfield at RCAF Station Dartmouth to form RCAF Station Shearwater (also known as RCNAS Shearwater). Royal Canadian Naval Air Service
The Royal Canadian Naval Air Service (RCNAS) was established in 1918 during the First World War in response to a Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) recommendation that defensive air patrols be established off Canada's Atlantic coast to protect shipping from German U-boats. Britain warned Canada that an attack by a new class of U-boat that could voyage across the Atlantic was possible. Although U-boats were few in number and not yet capable of posing a major threat in open ocean where ships were difficult to locate, they could be a threat near ports, bays or channels where ships would be certain to be grouped together. Aircraft had proven themselves in similar defensive situations such as convoys, where aircraft forced submarines to remain submerged.
