Naukan (village)
Naukan ( Naukan: ''Nuvuqaq''; Russian: Наукан, Yupik: нывукак "Soddy", ''Nuvuqaq'') is a deserted Yupik village on Cape Dezhnev, Russia. Prior to 1958, it was the easternmost settlement in the Eurasian continent. This distinction is now held by the Russian village Uelen in the Chukotsky District. History Naukan was founded in the 14th century. In 1648, Semyon Dezhnev reached Naukan, which is commemorated by a monument bust located on Mount Ingegruk. Other monuments situated in Naukan include a wooden cross built in 1910 at the lighthouse and a monument by the architect B. K. Semenenko built in 1956. The settlement was disbanded in 1958 as part of an enlargement campaign in rural areas. Those living there were Yupik Inuit (Eskimo) who spoke Naukan. Before the eviction of the indigenous people occurred, approximately 400 people lived in the village. Uelkal (russian: Уэлькаль; Yupik: Валъӄалыӄ, lit. ''Whale Jaw''; Chukchi: , ''Valḳalḷʼan'') is a village ('' selo'') in Iultinsky District of Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, Russia. Population: a slight reduction on a 2003 estimate of 258, of whom 208 were indigenous people, which itself showed a slight increase, up from 202 the previous year. Siberian Yupik
Siberian Yupiks, or Yuits (russian: Юиты), are a Yupik peoples, Yupik people who reside along the coast of the Chukchi Peninsula in the far Russian Far East, northeast of the Russia, Russian Federation and on St. Lawrence Island in Alaska. They speak Siberian Yupik language, Central Siberian Yupik (also known as Yuit), a Yupik language of the Eskimo–Aleut family of languages. They are also known as Siberian or Eskimo (russian: эскимосы). The name Yuit (юит, plural: юиты) was officially assigned to them in 1931, at the brief time of the campaign of support of indigenous cultures in the Soviet Union.
