Uelen
Uelen (russian: Уэлéн; Chukchi: , ''Uvèlèn''; Siberian Yupik: Улыӄ, ''Ulyḳ''; Naukan Yupik: Олыӄ, ''Oleq''; also known as Whalen in older English-language sources and Ugelen on USCGS charts) is a rural locality (a '' selo'') in Chukotsky District, just south of the Arctic Circle in Chukotka Autonomous Okrug in the Russian Far East. As of the 2010 Census, its population was 720. Located near Cape Dezhnev where the Bering Sea meets the Chukchi Sea, it is the easternmost settlement in Russia and the whole of Asia. It is located in the Western Hemisphere, but the International Date Line curves around it, so it remains in a Russian time zone ( UTC+12:00). Naukan (village)
Naukan ( Naukan: ''Nuvuqaq''; Russian: Наукан, Yupik: нывукак "Soddy", ''Nuvuqaq'') is a deserted Yupik village on Cape Dezhnev, Russia. Prior to 1958, it was the easternmost settlement in the Eurasian continent. This distinction is now held by the Russian village Uelen in the Chukotsky District. History Naukan was founded in the 14th century. In 1648, Semyon Dezhnev reached Naukan, which is commemorated by a monument bust located on Mount Ingegruk. Other monuments situated in Naukan include a wooden cross built in 1910 at the lighthouse and a monument by the architect B. K. Semenenko built in 1956. The settlement was disbanded in 1958 as part of an enlargement campaign in rural areas. Those living there were Yupik Inuit (Eskimo) who spoke Naukan. Before the eviction of the indigenous people occurred, approximately 400 people lived in the village. Koolen
Koolen ( esx, Koglu, label=Eskimo–Aleut) is a lake of Chukotsky District, Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, Russia. Its name originated in the Chukchi word ''Koolёn'', a fault or deep chasm.Boris Zhulanov. ''My Stern, Gentle Koolen'' - Ural pathfinder, 1990, number 10, pp 56-59 Geography Koolen is a long and narrow lake located in the Inan Range area of the Chukotka Mountains, at the eastern end of the Chukotka Peninsula, 13 km from the coast of the Chukchi Sea. The highest point near the lake is Mount Yttyvyt, a mountain. Koolen has a tectonic origin. Its water has a very weak content in minerals and is very transparent. The lake has a deep-blue tint and in the areas of greater depths the blue is so dark that it looks almost black. The area around the lake is uninhabited, the nearest town is Lavrentiya, located 44 km to the southwest. Yupik Language
The Yupik languages () are a family of languages spoken by the Yupik peoples of western and south-central Alaska and Chukotka. The Yupik languages differ enough from one another that they are not mutually intelligible, although speakers of one of the languages may understand the general idea of a conversation of speakers of another of the languages. One of them, Sirenik, has been extinct since 1997. The Yupik languages are in the family of Eskimo–Aleut languages.
