National Women's Hockey League (1999–2007)
The National Women's Hockey League (NWHL) was a women's ice hockey league established in Canada in service from 1999 to 2007. In its final season the league was run by the Ontario Women's Hockey Association. History The NWHL superseded the old Central Ontario Women's Hockey League in 1998–99. After the old COWHL dropped down to three teams in 1997–98, the new league expanded to Brampton, Ottawa and the Montreal area (Montreal, Bonaventure and Laval) in 1998–99. The league was officially renamed the National Women's Hockey League on Feb. 16, 1999 with Susan Fennell as the league's first president/Commissioner. In the inaugural season, the Beatrice Aeros won the West Division while the Bonaventure Wingstar won the East Division. Premier Hockey Federation
The Premier Hockey Federation (PHF), formerly the National Women's Hockey League (NWHL), is a women's professional ice hockey league located in the United States and Canada. The league was established in 2015 with four league-owned teams and has since grown to a mixture of seven independently owned teams: the Boston Pride, Buffalo Beauts, Connecticut Whale, Metropolitan Riveters, Minnesota Whitecaps, Montreal Force and Toronto Six. The Isobel Cup, the league's championship trophy, is awarded annually to the league playoff champion at the end of each season. The Montreal Jofa Titan (1998–99) was a professional women's ice hockey team in the National Women's Hockey League (1999–2007), National Women's Hockey League (NWHL). The team played its home games at the Concordia University (Quebec), Concordia University, Ed Meagher Arena in Montreal, Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Brampton Thunder
The Markham Thunder was a professional women's ice hockey team in the Canadian Women's Hockey League (CWHL). From 1998 through 2017, the franchise was known as the Brampton Thunder and Brampton Canadettes-Thunder before relocating from Brampton, Ontario, to Markham, Ontario, for the 2017–18 season. The CWHL ceased operations in 2019 and no further statements or actions were taken with the franchise. The 2006–07 WWHL season was the third season of the Western Women's Hockey League. The Calgary Oval X-Treme enjoyed an undefeated season and claimed the WWHL Champions cup. Exhibition *Oct 23, 2006: Calgary Flames Alumni took on the Calgary Oval X-Treme at the Max Bell Centre in the Calgary Super Drug Mart Champions' Cup, winning by a 9-8 score in an over time shoot out. 2006–07 NWHL Season
Inefficient NWHL Management controversy * February 10, 2007: In a game against the Brampton Thunder, the game ended in controversy. The Montreal Axion had a 2-1 lead in the third period. Jesse Scanzano scored two goals with assists going to Annie Derossiers, Cathy Chartrand and Melissa Roy. Brampton tied the game and Jesse Scanzanao missed an open net to put the game away. The teams ended up going to overtime. Annie Derossiers took a penalty at the 3:21 mark in overtime. The game would be settled in a shootout. Annie Derossiers left the penalty box prior to the shootout commencing and took the first shot for the Axion. This violated NWHL rules, as league rules state that any player serving a penalty at the end of overtime is to remain in the penalty box and would be unavailable for the shootout.
