Martinsburg, New York
Martinsburg is a town in Lewis County, New York, United States. The population was 1,433 at the 2010 census. The town is named after its founding father, General Walter Martin. Martinsburg is in the west-central part of the county, south of Lowville, the county seat. History Settlers began arriving around 1801. Martinsburg was established from part of the town of Turin in 1803. When it was formed the town name was spelled "Martinsburgh". In 1819, the town was augmented by more of Turin. The community of Martinsburg in the town was the county seat for Lewis County until 1864, when it moved to Lowville. The town hall in Martinsburg, built in 1812, is the site of the first county court session, held the same year. In 1839, it was the site of the only execution in the county. The Gen. Port Leyden, New York
Port Leyden is a village in Lewis County, New York, United States. The population was 672 at the 2010 census. The name is derived from the village's early history as a port on the Black River Canal. The village of Port Leyden is mostly in the town of Leyden, but a portion of the village lies to the east of the Black River in the town of Lyonsdale. The village is south of Lowville, the county seat, north of Boonville, and by road west-southwest of Old Forge. History A mill was built at the present site of the village around 1800, and the community was known as "Kelsey's Mills". The name was changed to "Port Leyden" around 1838 when the Black River Canal was being developed. The canal was completed to Port Leyden in 1850, but was not usable until 1851. The canal reached its northern terminus at Lyons Falls, a few miles north, in 1855. Watson is a town in Lewis County, New York, United States. The population was 1,881 at the 2010 census. The town is named after early landowner James Watson. The town is at the eastern border of the county and is east of Lowville, the county seat. History The area of Watson was first settled ''circa'' 1815. The town was formed from the town of Leyden in 1821. Parts of Watson were later taken to form the towns of Greig (1828), Diana (1830), Croghan (1841) and New Bremen (1848). Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , of which are land and , or 2.56%, are water. The eastern town line is the border of Herkimer County, and the western town line is partly defined by the Black River.
