Franklin County, Mississippi
Franklin County is a county located in the U.S. state of Mississippi. As of the 2010 census, the population was 8,118, making it the fourth-least populous county in Mississippi. Its county seat is Meadville. The county was formed on December 21, 1809, from portions of Adams County and named for Founding Father Benjamin Franklin. It is bisected by the Homochitto River, which runs diagonally through the county from northeast to southwest. History This was the fourth county organized in Mississippi. It was initially developed for agriculture, specifically cotton plantations based on enslaved labor of African Americans. Cotton continued to be important to the economy through the 19th century and into the early 20th century. This still rural county has had a decline in population by about half since 1910. McCall Creek, Mississippi
McCall Creek is an unincorporated community in Franklin County, Mississippi. It is located in eastern Franklin County, approximately two miles west of the Franklin-Lincoln County line, and is traversed by U.S. Route 84. The community was founded by European Americans in the early 1900s and was named for the McCall family, early settlers. In 1911, the community was incorporated as the village of McCall. The village had a recorded population of 140 at the 1920 census and 169 in 1930. Thereafter, the community reverted to unincorporated status. Today, McCall Creek has a store and sawmill. It has a post office, with the ZIP code 39647. The additional two lanes went in north of the existing two-lane road. Roxie, Mississippi
Roxie is a town in Franklin County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 497 at the 2010 census, down from 569 at the 2000 census. This rural town developed with the construction of railroads in the area. History Roxie was founded in 1886 on a plot of farmland donated by John Quincy Adams Graves, who was the County Supervisor and a former soldier in the Regimental Band of the 4th Volunteer Mississippi Regiment during the Civil War. The town was named in honor of Graves' newborn daughter. Roxie was incorporated in 1890. The town was located at the crossroads of the Louisville, New Orleans and Texas Railway and the Yazoo and Mississippi Valley Railroad. Most of the early residents were employed by the railroads or worked in the logging industry and sawmills. Roxie's children attended the Roxie School, whose motto was ''Home of the Tigers''. Homochitto River
The Homochitto River (pronounced "ho-muh-CHIT-uh") is a river in the U.S. State of Mississippi. It flows from its source in southwest Mississippi for about west and south, emptying into the Mississippi River between Natchez and Woodville. According to one source, Homochitto is a Choctaw name likely meaning "big red". Course The Homochitto River originates in several headwater tributaries along the border between Copiah County and Lincoln County. It flows west and then south through the Homochitto National Forest. After passing through Lincoln County the river enters Franklin County, still flowing generally south. Just before McCall Creek joins from the east, the Homochitto is crossed by two bridges, one for U.S. Route 84 and one for the Illinois Central Railroad. Eddiceton is an unincorporated community in Franklin County, Mississippi, United States. The community is located along U.S. Route 84 northeast of Bude. Meadville, Mississippi
Meadville is a town in and the county seat of Franklin County, Mississippi, United States, in the southwest part of the state. The population was 449 at the 2010 census, down from 519 at the 2000 census. It is situated north of the Homochitto River, which runs from the northeast to the southwest through the county on its way to its outlet at the Mississippi River.
