Monroe County, Mississippi
Monroe County is a county on the northeast border of the U.S. state of Mississippi next to Alabama. As of the 2010 census, the population was 36,989. Its county seat is Aberdeen. History The county is named in honor of James Monroe, the fifth President of the United States. Part of the county east of the Tombigbee River originally made-up part of the Alabama Territory, belonging to Marion County, until new lines of demarcation put it in the State of Mississippi in 1821. Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of , of which is land and (0.9%) is water. Aberdeen, Mississippi
Aberdeen is the county seat of Monroe County, Mississippi, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 5,612. Located on the banks of the Tombigbee River, Aberdeen was one of the busiest Mississippi ports of the 19th century. Cotton was heavily traded in town, and for a time Aberdeen was Mississippi's second largest city. Aberdeen retains many historic structures from this period, with over 200 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. The Tombigbee River is a tributary of the Mobile River, approximately 200 mi (325 km) long, in the U.S. states of Mississippi and Alabama. Together with the Alabama, it merges to form the short Mobile River before the latter empties into Mobile Bay on the Gulf of Mexico. Amory, Mississippi
Amory is a city in Monroe County, Mississippi. The population was 7,316 at the 2010 census. Located in the northeastern part of the state near the Alabama border, it was founded in 1887 as a railroad town by the Kansas City, Memphis and Birmingham Railroad. As a result, Cotton Gin Port, along the Tombigbee River to the east, was abandoned as businesses and people moved for railroad access. History Amory was founded as a planned railroad town. The Kansas City, Memphis & Birmingham Railroad was expanding in the South and needed a midpoint between Memphis, Tennessee, and Birmingham, Alabama, to service their locomotives. Mississippi Highway 382
Mississippi Highway 382 (MS 382) is a state highway in eastern Mississippi. The route starts at U.S. Route 45 Alternate (US 45 Alt.) near Prairie and travels eastward. The road travels through farmland as it reaches Prairie. MS 382 then ends at MS 25 near Aberdeen. The road was constructed around 1951 from MS 45W (now US 45 Alt.) west of Prairie to US 45 in Aberdeen, and it was designated by 1958. The eastern terminus was changed to MS 25 from US 45 by 1967. Route description All of the route is located in Monroe County. In 2017, the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) calculated as many as 1,200 vehicles traveling on MS 382 west of Old Magnolia Highway, and as few as 910 vehicles traveling west of Chips Lane. Athens, Mississippi
Athens is an unincorporated community in Monroe County, Mississippi. History Athens was founded in 1830 and became the second county seat of Monroe County when Monroe County was split to form Lowndes County. Athens was named for the city in Greece, as the community's founders hoped it would become a "city of learning." Athens was located on a stagecoach line that ran from the Natchez District to Eastport. Athens was once home to six stores, three hotels, two churches, two taverns, and a school. In the 1840s, Athens had a population of 500. In 1849, the courthouse in Athens burned down and by 1857 the county seat was moved west of the Tombigbee River to Aberdeen.
