Flora, Mississippi
Flora is a town in Madison County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,886 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town is named after Flora Mann Jones, an early resident. History Graves in Flora's cemetery date to 1821. A post office was established in 1883. That same year, Flora became a stop on the newly constructed Yazoo and Mississippi Valley Railroad. The railroad depot is now a museum, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Flora was incorporated in 1886. Mississippi Ordnance Plant In 1941, the Mississippi Ordnance Plant was constructed north of Flora to produce propellant and igniter charges for large-caliber guns during World War II. Illinois Central Railroad
The Illinois Central Railroad , sometimes called the Main Line of Mid-America, was a railroad in the Central United States, with its primary routes connecting Chicago, Illinois, with New Orleans, Louisiana, and Mobile, Alabama. A line also connected Chicago with Sioux City, Iowa (1870). There was a significant branch to Omaha, Nebraska (1899), west of Fort Dodge, Iowa, and another branch reaching Sioux Falls, South Dakota (1877), starting from Cherokee, Iowa. The Sioux Falls branch has been abandoned in its entirety. The Canadian National Railway acquired control of the IC in 1998, and merged its operations in 1999. Illinois Central continues to exist as a paper railroad. History The IC was one of the oldest Class I railroads in the United States. Goshen Springs, Mississippi
Goshen Springs (also New Goshen Springs) is an unincorporated community in Rankin County, Mississippi, United States. History The settlement was founded around 1833. Goshen Springs had a post office. The historic building has since been moved to a museum in Brandon. Near Goshen Springs is the Armstrong Site, a prehistoric archeological settlement listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Goshen Springs lies along a now-abandoned portion of the Illinois Central Railroad. The ''Rebel'' passenger train once passed through Goshen Springs each day. In 1965, during the Civil Rights Movement, 31-year-old John Lee of Goshen Springs was found beaten to death on a county road. He had attended some civil rights meetings. His murder remains unsolved. Choctaw
The Choctaw (in the Choctaw language, Chahta) are a Native American people originally based in the Southeastern Woodlands, in what is now Alabama and Mississippi. Their Choctaw language is a Western Muskogean language. Today, Choctaw people are enrolled in three federally recognized tribes: the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians, and Jena Band of Choctaw Indians in Louisiana. Natchez Trace
The Natchez Trace, also known as the Old Natchez Trace, is a historic forest trail within the United States which extends roughly from Nashville, Tennessee, to Natchez, Mississippi, linking the Cumberland, Tennessee, and Mississippi rivers. The trail was created and used by Native Americans for centuries, and was later used by early European and American explorers, traders, and emigrants in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. European Americans founded inns, also known as "stands", along the Trace to serve food and lodging to travelers. As travel shifted to steamboats on the Mississippi and other rivers, most of these stands closed. Today, the path is commemorated by the Natchez Trace Parkway, which follows the approximate path of the Trace, as well as the related Natchez Trace Trail. Madison is a city in Madison County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 24,841 at the 2010 census. The population is currently over 25,000. It is part of the Jackson Metropolitan Statistical Area. History The city of Madison, named for James Madison, the fourth President of the United States, developed along a bustling railroad track in antebellum Mississippi. It began in 1856 when the Illinois Central Railroad opened Madison Station, the forerunner of the city of Madison. The nearby town of Madisonville was a settlement along the stagecoach route on the Natchez Trace. It was the first county seat of Madison County in 1828, and had a race track, two banks, a wagon factory, and at least one hotel. Its residents gradually moved to the new railroad community, and old Madisonville became defunct. Mississippi Highway 463 (MS 463) is a north–south state highway in Madison County, Mississippi, connecting U.S. Route 51 (US 51) in Madison to MS 22 east of Flora. It intersects Interstate 55 (I-55) at the state's only single-point urban interchange. Route description MS 463 starts at the intersection of US 51 and Hoy Road in Madison, and travels westward from the center of the town. The road, known as Madison Parkway, crosses over a railroad and intersects Main Street. The route then travels northwestwards on Main Street and meets I-55 at a single-point urban interchange. Past Highland Colony Parkway and Bozeman Road, the road becomes New Mannsdale Road, and later Mannsdale Road at its intersection with Henderson Road.
