Frank Bird Linderman
Frank Bird Linderman (September 25, 1869 – May 12, 1938) was a Montana writer, politician, Native American ally and ethnographer. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, he went West as a young man and became enamored of life on the Montana frontier. While working as a trapper for several years, he lived with the Salish and Blackfeet tribes, learning their cultures. He later became an advocate for them and for other northern Plains Indians. He wrote about their cultures and worked to help them survive pressure from European Americans. For instance, he supported establishment of the Rocky Boy Indian Reservation in 1916 in Montana for landless Ojibwe (Chippewa) and Cree, and continued as an advocate for Native Americans to his death. Linderman worked at various jobs throughout his life: as a fur trapper, then an assayer, and later an agent for Guardian Insurance of America. He owned a hotel for two years. Swan Lake, Montana
Swan Lake is a census-designated place and unincorporated community in Lake County, Montana, United States. Its population was 113 as of the 2010 census. Geography The Swan Lake CDP is in northeastern Lake County, on the east shore of the south end of the lake of the same name. The CDP extends east to the Lake County/ Flathead County line, which runs along the crest of the Swan Range. The northern edge of the CDP follows Groom Creek, while the southern edge follows Bond Creek. Elevations range from on Swan Lake to at the summit of Con Kelly Mountain in the Swan Range. Montana Highway 83 runs through the community close to the shore of Swan Lake; it leads northwest to Montana Highway 35 north of Bigfork and south to Montana Highway 200 at Clearwater. Montana Highway 83 (MT 83) is a north–south state highway in Flathead, Lake, and Missoula counties in Montana, United States, that connects Montana Highway 200 (MT 200) in Clearwater (east of Missoula) with Montana Highway 35 (MT 35) on north edge of Bigfork. Route description MT 83 starts at the intersection with MT 200 at Clearwater Junction, about east of Missoula, and runs north-northwesterly, mostly through broad, forested valleys and along scenic lakeshores within the Lolo National Forest, Flathead National Forest and Swan River State Forest, before curving west to its northern terminus at MT 35 about north of Bigfork. Lakeside, Montana
Lakeside is an unincorporated area and census-designated place (CDP) in Flathead County, Montana, United States. The population was 2,669 at the 2010 census, up from 1,679 in 2000. In 1892 the town was called Stoner, named after John J. Stoner, proprietor of a hotel near the shores of Flathead Lake. A community named Lakeside already existed in Roosevelt County. With its demise in 1920, this town changed its name. West Shore State Park is 5 miles south of town. Geography Lakeside is located in southern Flathead County at (48.019933, -114.228152), on the western shore of the north end of Flathead Lake. It is bordered to the north by Somers, and it extends south as far as the Lake County line. Bigfork, Montana
Bigfork is a census-designated place (CDP) in Flathead County, Montana, United States. It is within Montana's Rocky Mountains. The population was 4,270 at the 2010 census, up from 1,421 in 2000. History Some say the name "Bigfork" is derived from the Salish name for the area. However Bigfork is a fork where two rivers, the Flathead River and the Swan River, flow in to the Flathead Lake. There are reports of a homestead and orchard immediately north of Bigfork as early as 1885. Everit L. Sliter set out 500 apple, cherry, plum, and pear trees in 1892 on Flathead Lake's east shore. He became the first postmaster in 1901. In 1902, he platted the Bigfork townsite at the mouth of the Swan River. The east shore has since become a major cherry-growing area.
