Lyon Mountain, New York
Lyon Mountain is a hamlet and census-designated place located in the town of Dannemora in Clinton County, New York, United States. The population was 423 at the 2010 census. The northern slopes of Lyon Mountain are in the southern part of the community, with the summit to the south in the town of Saranac. The Lyon Mountain Correctional Facility, a minimum security prison, was located in the community. The facility closed in 2011, and has been purchased by a Canadian who has mined sand for hydrofracking from the site. Geography The hamlet of Lyon Mountain is located at (44.728863, -73.907905). Dannemora is a town in Clinton County, New York, United States. The population was 4,898 at the 2010 census. The town is named after Dannemora, Sweden, an important iron-mining region. The town of Dannemora contains a village also called Dannemora, the southern portion of which is located in the town of Saranac. Both village and town are on the western border of Clinton County, west of Plattsburgh. History The area was first settled ''circa'' 1838. A prison was opened in 1845, so as to utilize the prisoners in local mining operations. The town of Dannemora was formed in 1854 from the town of Beekmantown. The Battle of Valcour Island, also known as the Battle of Valcour Bay, was a naval engagement that took place on October 11, 1776, on Lake Champlain. The main action took place in Valcour Bay, a narrow strait between the New York mainland and Valcour Island. Battle Of Plattsburgh
The Battle of Plattsburgh, also known as the Battle of Lake Champlain, ended the final British invasion of the northern states of the United States during the War of 1812. An army under Lieutenant General Sir George Prévost and a naval squadron under Captain George Downie converged on the lakeside town of Plattsburgh, New York. Plattsburgh was defended by New York and Vermont militia and detachments of regular troops of the United States Army, all under the command of Brigadier General Alexander Macomb, and ships commanded by Master Commandant Thomas Macdonough. Downie's squadron attacked shortly after dawn on 11 September 1814, but was defeated after a hard fight in which Downie was killed. Benjamin Mooers
Benjamin Mooers (April 1, 1758 – February 20, 1838) was a military veteran of both the Revolutionary War and War of 1812, and a politician, serving in the New York State legislature. He also served as a sheriff of Clinton County, New York in between the wars. Early life Benjamin Mooers was born in Haverhill, Massachusetts to Abigail and Benjamin Mooers on April 1, 1758. In 1773 Mooers started an apprenticeship under John White, a merchant and importer in Haverhill. He worked with White until the Revolutionary War began, when Mooers enlisted as a volunteer in the Continental Army. Later life In 1783 he settled in the vicinity of Plattsburgh, New York, a frontier settlement at the time. Mooers was the sheriff of Clinton County and a presidential elector in 1808.
