Carroll County is a United States county located in the southwestern part of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Roughly one fifth of the county lies in the Virginia Piedmont region, while the rest is part of the Appalachian Mountains. The county seat and largest town is Hillsville. The county was established in 1842 from part of Grayson County, and was officially named in honor of Charles Carroll, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. The borders of Carroll County were later expanded by including land from Patrick County. The total size of the county is 478 square miles (1,238 km2), and, as of the 2020 census, the population was 29,155. History The first European settlers arrived in the region in the mid 18th century. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.1 square miles (10.5 km), all of it land. Hillsville is a town in Carroll County, Virginia, United States. The population was 2,897 at the 2020 census. It is the county seat of Carroll County. Geography Hillsville is located in central Carroll County at (36.758814, −80.734510). U.S. Routes 52, 221 and 58 intersect in the center of town. US 52 leads northwest to Wytheville and south to Mount Airy, North Carolina, while US 221 leads northeast to Roanoke and southwest to Galax. US 58 leads east to Martinsville and west to Galax with US 221. The Hillsville town limits extend west along US 221 and 58 to Interstate 77, which leads north to Interstate 81 east of Wytheville and south to Interstate 74 in North Carolina. Laurel Fork, Virginia
Laurel Fork is an unincorporated community in Carroll County, Virginia. It is located off U.S. Route 58 and is east-southeast of Hillsville, Virginia. Laurel Fork has a post office with the ZIP code 24352. Before the town was known as Laurel Fork, it was called Bolt Town, named after a Doctor Bolt and his numerous family members who originally inhabited the town. Then consisting of Sam Bolt's store, a post office, and a few farms, Bolt Town was nicknamed "Little Cincinnati" because of the perceived superior attitude of its residents. Eventually, the community took its name from the Laurel Fork Creek that winds through the hills nearby, which in turn was named after the native Rhododendron. Early English settlers, not knowing the Rhododendron's name, called it "laurel" after the shrubs they knew from England. Woodlawn is musically notable as the home of Heritage Shoppe and Heritage Records, a store and record label owned by Bobby Patterson, a musician from a regionally important family of performers. Heritage Records specializes in local musicians, and also releases recordings from the Old Fiddlers' Convention in Galax, Virginia. History The area of present-day Woodlawn, located in Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains, began as a land grant to James Wood of Frederick County, Virginia in 1756. His son, James Wood, served as governor of Virginia from 1796 to 1799. The Treaty of Lochaber, between British representative John Stuart and the Cherokee, made the land available for settlement about 1770.
