Virginia State Route 43
State Route 43 (SR 43) is a primary state highway in the U.S. state of Virginia. The state highway consists of two disjoint segments that have a total length of . The southern portion of the state highway runs from U.S. Route 29 Business (US 29 Bus.) in Altavista north to the Blue Ridge Parkway at Peaks of Otter. The northern segment has a length of between the Blue Ridge Parkway near Buchanan and US 220 in Eagle Rock. The two sections of SR 43 are connected by of the Blue Ridge Parkway. The southern portion of the state highway connects Altavista with Bedford and Peaks of Otter. The northern section of SR 43 follows the James River through a narrow valley (Narrow Passage Road) between Buchanan and Eagle Rock. Peaks Of Otter
The Peaks of Otter are three mountain peaks in the Blue Ridge Mountains, overlooking the town of Bedford, Virginia, which lies nine miles (14 km) to the southeast along State Route 43. These peaks are Sharp Top, Flat Top, and Harkening Hill. The manmade Abbott Lake lies in the valley between the three peaks, behind the Peaks of Otter Lodge and restaurant. The National Park Service preserves the peaks and lake as part of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Thomas Jefferson once wrote that "the mountains of the Blue Ridge, and of these the Peaks of Otter, are thought to be of a greater height, measured from their base, than any others in our country, and perhaps in North America." Thaxton, Virginia
Thaxton is an unincorporated community in western Bedford County, Virginia, United States. The community is located along US Route 460 between Bedford and Montvale. It is part of the Lynchburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Thomas Methodist Episcopal Chapel was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. Thaxton was the site of a deadly train accident on July 2, 1889 that killed at least 18 and injured 21. The accident, caused when a passenger train derailed over a section of track that had been washed away by unusually heavy rains, was one of the deadliest railroad accidents in Virginia's history. A memorial was erected later that year in Cleveland, Tennessee in memory of three of the victims, all from prominent families in that city, who were on their way to attend the 1889 World's Fair in Paris. Moneta is a census-designated place in Bedford County, Virginia, United States. The community is located along Route 122 between the towns of Bedford and Rocky Mount. History Olive Branch Missionary Baptist Church and the Holland-Duncan House are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. On August 26, 2015, the community made news when journalists Alison Parker and Adam Ward were murdered on live television by former colleague Vester Flanagan at a nearby shopping center and marina. Leesville is an unincorporated community in Campbell County, in the U. S. state of Virginia. Geography The town of Leesville is situated at the confluence of Goose Creek and the Staunton River, just below the lower dam of Leesville Lake.
