Appomattox County is a United States county located in the Piedmont region and near the center of the Commonwealth of Virginia. The county is part of the Lynchburg, VA Metropolitan Statistical Area, and its county seat is the town of Appomattox. Appomattox County was created in 1845 from parts of four other Virginia counties. The name of the county comes from the Appamatuck Indians, who lived in the area. As of the 2020 census, the population was 16,119. History Appomattox County was formed in 1845 from Buckingham, Prince Edward, Campbell, and Charlotte counties. In 1848, another part from Campbell County was added. State Route 24 (SR 24) is a primary state highway in the U.S. state of Virginia. The state highway runs from U.S. Route 221 (US 221) and SR 116 in Roanoke east to US 60 in Mt. Rush. SR 24 connects Roanoke with several small communities in southern Bedford County and central Campbell County. The state highway also runs concurrently with US 460 west of Appomattox and passes through Appomattox Court House National Historical Park, which is the site of Robert E. State Route 131 (SR 131) is a primary state highway in the U.S. state of Virginia. The state highway runs from U.S. Route 460 Business (US 460 Business) north to US 460 and SR 24 within Appomattox. SR 131 serves the Appomattox Historic District, which includes the downtown area of the town of Appomattox. Route description SR 131 begins at US 460 Business (Confederate Boulevard) on the east side of the town of Appomattox. The state highway heads west along Oakleigh Avenue to the edge of the downtown area, where the highway turns south onto Church Street. Before reaching the railroad tracks, which are part of Norfolk Southern Railway's Blue Ridge District, SR 131 heads onto Main Street, which is one-way toward the east. Traffic heading west must use Harrell Street to Lee Street to the west end of Main Street's one-way section. Pamplin City is a town in Appomattox and Prince Edward counties in the U.S. state of Virginia. The population was 219 at the 2010 census. The Appomattox County portion of Pamplin City is part of the Lynchburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Pamplin is the home of a Clay Pipe Factory, formerly the largest clay pipe factory in the United States. It is located to the side of Business 460. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 1980. The Buffalo Presbyterian Church was listed on the NRHP in 1995. This town was a stop on the Southside Railroad in the mid-nineteenth Century.
