The National NewsMedia Council is a national press council that reviews and adjudicates complaints from the public about the news media organizations in Canada. The council was created as an amalgamation of several regional press councils, including the Ontario Press Council. History The National NewsMedia Council was created in 2015. It replaced regional press councils, including the Ontario Press Council, the Atlantic Press Council and the British Columbia Press Council. The council was created after declining financial support for regional press councils. The Quebec Press Council and the Alberta Press Council declined to join. The Alberta Press Council ceased to exist on Dec. 31, 2018 and its members were invited to join the National NewsMedia Council. John Fraser (journalist)
John Anderson Fraser (born June 5, 1944) is a Canadian journalist, writer and academic. He served as Master of Massey College in the University of Toronto from 1995 until his retirement in June 2014. He is currently the executive chair of the National NewsMedia Council of Canada. As a journalist, Fraser received multiple national awards and chaired the Canadian Journalism Foundation until 2008. He initiated and taught a course on Canadian newspaper history at St. Michael's College, University of Toronto. Education During his teenage years, Fraser attended four high schools: Toronto's Upper Canada College, Oakwood Collegiate Institute, Lakefield College School in Lakefield, Ontario, and Jarvis Collegiate Institute. Frances Lankin
Frances Lankin, (born April 16, 1954), is a Canadian senator, former president and CEO of United Way Toronto, and a former Ontario MPP and cabinet minister in the NDP government of Bob Rae between 1990 and 1995. From 2010 to 2012, she co-chaired a government commission review of social assistance in Ontario. From 2009 to 2016, she was a member of the Security Intelligence Review Committee. The Ontario Press Council was a voluntary media adjudication body which investigates complaints about newspapers in Ontario, Canada. On September 1, 2015, it was amalgamated into the newly formed National Newsmedia Council. History The council was founded in 1972 with Davidson Dunton as its founding chair.
