{{unreferenced, date=January 2012 In 1962, Ormond Panton, OBE and his chief ally, William Warren Conolly, OBE of East End (both now National Heroes) founded and became the first two members of the National Democratic Party. It was the first successful political party in the Cayman Islands following on from the earlier attempted Cayman Vanguard Party formed by Conolly in 1958. Mr Ormond Panton became the first Caymanian to win an election as Party Leader. The party won the majority of the seats (7-5) in the 1964 elections but did not control the government as the UK administrator at the time, Mr. Jack Rose CMG, MBE had the power to appoint members and appointed members that opposed them. The nominated members along with the minority thus formed the government. In 1968 only William Warren Conolly retained his seat as the rest of the party lost at the polls. The Hon. William Warren Conolly, OBE, JP (5 December 1920 – 22 October 2008 caycompass.com) was a politician and attorney in the . He first entered the Cayman Government in 1944 as one of three elected members from the East End District. He traveled overseas from 1945 through 1948 in a personal capacity. In 1950 he was nominated to the Assembly by the Governor of Jamaica and the Cayman Islands and remained in Legislative Assembly of Vestrymen and Justices until the new constitution in 1959. The Cayman Democratic Party, formerly known as the United Democratic Party, was a political party in the Cayman Islands formed in late 2001 and collapsed in February 2021. History In the elections of 8 November 2000, with a turnout of 80%, only non-partisans were elected. After the election members of parliament formed the United Democratic Party, currently headed by McKeeva Bush. The Cayman Democratic Party served as the opposition party in the Legislative Assembly of the Cayman Islands from 2013 to 2017. The party also previously served as opposition from May 2005-May 2009. After the 2017 election, a coalition government between the Progressives, Democratic Party, and independents was announced where Alden McLaughlin of the Progressives would have remained as premier and Democratic leader Bush would have become speaker. The People's Progressive Movement is a political party in the Cayman Islands currently headed by Roy McTaggart. History The People's Progressive Movement was founded in 2002. The founding members of the Party, which included Parliamentarians Kurt Tibbetts, Alden McLaughlin, Anthony Eden and Arden McLean, together with Lucille Seymour and many other "Movers and Shakers", committed to the ideals of principle-led governance, full participatory democracy, the formulation of a national development plan and a long term vision of where they wanted to take the country. Through the Party's internal processes, the members chose the candidates to represent the Party and ultimately the people of the Cayman Islands. The Governor of the Cayman Islands is the representative of the British monarch in the United Kingdom's overseas territory of the Cayman Islands. The Governor, a civil servant who has in modern times typically been a British subject normally resident in the United Kingdom, is appointed by the monarch from the staff of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office on the advice of the British government.
