The National Democracy (''Democrazia Nazionale'', DN) party was a spin-off of the Italian Social Movement, after the electoral defeat of 1976. Alfredo Covelli
Alfredo Covelli (22 February 1914 – 25 December 1998) was an Italian monarchist politician. He was the leader of the Monarchist National Party. Covelli was born in Bonito, Campania. He graduated in literature and philosophy, in law and political science in the second half of the 1930s, and in 1940 he was a teacher of Latin and Greek in a grammar school in Benevento. He took part in the Second World War as official in the Air Force, and after a series of operations in Tirana and Bari, he received a decoration for military valor. In 1946 he was elected a Member of Parliament as a candidate for the National Bloc of Freedom and in the referendum of 2 June he voted to keep the House of Savoy as the royal house of Italy. In July of the same year he founded the Monarchist National Party, of which he was elected to the Italian Chamber of Deputies in 1948, and so would be until 1976. The Italian Social Movement ( it, Movimento Sociale Italiano, MSI) was a neo-fascist political party in Italy. A far-right party, it presented itself until the 1990s as the defender of Italian fascism's legacy, and later moved towards national conservatism. In 1972, the Italian Democratic Party of Monarchist Unity was merged into the MSI and the party's official name was changed to Italian Social Movement – National Right ( it, Movimento Sociale Italiano – Destra Nazionale, italics=no, MSI–DN). Formed in 1946 by supporters of the former dictator Benito Mussolini, most of whom took part in the experience of the Italian Social Republic and the Republican Fascist Party, the MSI became the fourth largest party in Italy by the early 1960s. Christian Democracy ( it, Democrazia Cristiana, DC) was a Christian democratic political party in Italy. The DC was founded on 15 December 1943 in the Italian Social Republic (Nazi-occupied Italy) as the ideal successor of the Italian People's Party, which had the same symbol, a crusader shield (''scudo crociato''). This election was called just a week before the European vote: the failure to hold the two elections at the same time caused much criticism for wasting public money. Terrorist attacks by the Red Brigades caused a reversal in the result of the previous election three years before: for the first time the Italian Communist Party lost significant numbers of seats, delaying the government change that had seemed imminent in 1976.
