National Archives Of Seychelles
The Seychelles National Archives is the national archive of Seychelles and is located in Mahé. Their mission is to "collect, preserve and make accessible archival documents of enduring value through the use of the latest information technology." It was officially created in 1964. The archives were originally kept in the same building as the National Library of Seychelles, but after a fungus outbreak in 2012 the archive's location was moved to a different building the following year. The new location is in the Helena Complex in Port Island, with all legal documents housed in the Seychelles Magistrates' Court in Victoria and data entry is in the Providence Atoll. Mahé, Seychelles
Mahé is the largest island of Seychelles, with an area of , lying in the northeast of the Seychellean nation in the Somali Sea part of the Indian Ocean. The population of Mahé was 77,000, as of the 2010 census. It contains the capital city of Victoria and accommodates 86% of the country's total population. The island was named after Bertrand-François Mahé de La Bourdonnais, a French governor of Isle de France (modern-day Mauritius). History Mahé was first visited by the British in 1609 and not visited by Europeans again until Lazare Picault's expedition of 1742. The French navy frégate '' Le Cerf'' (English: The Deer) arrived at Port Victoria on 1 November 1756. National Library Of Seychelles
The National Library of the Seychelles a library located in Victoria, Mahé, Seychelles. It is the legal deposit and copyright library for Seychelles. History The Seychelles National Library's predecessor, the Carnegie Library, opened in 1910. It was funded by the Carnegie Trust Fund and managed by a board of trustees. In 1970, the Department of Education took over and renamed it the Carnegie Public Library, leading to the dissolution of the board. In 1978, the Carnegie Public Library became the National Library of Seychelles. The following year, it moved to a newly renovated building on State House Avenue. The British Council supported the library by providing a grant for new shelves, appointing an English librarian, and expanding the collection. Port Island, Seychelles
Port Island (french: Ile du Port) is an artificial island in Seychelles, lying 2 km from the capital Victoria. History The island was constructed between 1995 and 2002. It belongs to the Mahe Port Islands, which are mostly artificial islands created by funds from Dubai when the Dubai dredger was placed in Seychelles. The works began in 1998 in 2009 the new Seychelles National Assembly building was inaugurated. In 2012 the island was ready for installment of wind turbines. In 2013 the island was visited by UN inspectors inspecting worldwide scale of wind farms. Victoria, Seychelles
Victoria () is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Seychelles, situated on the north-eastern side of Mahé island, the archipelago's main island. The city was first established as the seat of the British colonial government. In 2010, the population of Greater Victoria (including the suburbs) was 26,450 (26.66%) out of the country's total population of 99,202. History The area that would become Victoria was originally settled in 1778 by French colonists after they claimed the island in 1756. The town was called ''L'Établissement'' until 1841 when it was renamed to Victoria by the British, after Queen Victoria. Economy Tourism is an important sector of the economy. Providence Atoll
The Providence Atoll is part of the Farquhar Group of islands in the Seychelles that are part of the Outer Islands, with a distance of southwest of the capital, Victoria, on Mahé Island. History The atoll was discovered in 1501 by Joao da Nova, a Portuguese explorer. The atoll was under British control until 1976 when they became part of Seychelles at the time of independence. Providence got its name after an event which happened in 1763. A French frigate, ”Heureuse” , was stranded on its reef, 705 km from Victoria near the northern end of the atoll. The sailors reached Providence Island and were rescued a month later. It proved the salvation(fr: Providence) of the French sailors.
