Nathaniel Taylor (born August 19, 1969 in Boston, Massachusetts) is a sculptor and professional fabricator. He was a host on the Discovery Channel's ''Smash Lab''. He graduated from the Northwest School of Woodenboat Building, Port Townsend, Washington, and the California College of the Arts (formerly California College of Arts and Crafts). Taylor has taught at The Crucible (arts education center), the University of California, Berkeley and the California College of the Arts, teaching classes in kinetic art, and new media New media describes communication technologies that enable or enhance interaction between users as well as interaction between users and content. The Crucible (arts Education Center)
The Crucible is a nonprofit industrial arts school in Oakland, California, United States. Established in Berkeley in 1999, the institute was moved to its present location in 2003. The Crucible has classes in blacksmithing, ceramics, enameling, fire performance, foundry, glass, hot wheels, jewelry, kinetics and electronics, machine shop, moldmaking, neon and light, stone working, textiles, welding, woodworking, and other industrial arts with an average of 5,000 students a year. The Crucible's Youth Program serves over 3,000 youth annually, half of whom are members of the West Oakland community who have access to free classes and workshops. ''Smash Lab'' is a reality television series that premiered on December 26, 2007, on the Discovery Channel. The idea of the show is to take everyday technology and test it in "extraordinary ways". The show started broadcasting in the UK on 3 March 2014 on Discovery Turbo and 7 April on Community Channel with Tony Hirst as the narrator. Discovery Turbo only aired 10 episodes, whereas Community Channel showed all 20 episodes. Raygun Gothic Rocket
The Raygun Gothic Rocketship is a retro-futurist art sculpture in the shape of a giant rocketship. It was created by Bay Area artists Nathaniel Taylor, Sean Orlando, and David Shulman. The exhibit stands 40 feet tall and weighs 13,000 pounds. The ship was built with 3 walkable decks. The interior is divided into the Engine Room & Life-Sciences Bio Lab, Crew Quarters & Navigation, and the upper Flight Deck and pilot chair. The interior includes artistic details such as captured "alien specimens" and a zero gravity bed. Creating the rocket required the work of 85 artists, engineers, fabricators, scientists and computer engineers. The creators described the art as "a future-rustic vision of yesterday’s tomorrow".
