North Greenland Section-txu-pclmaps-oclc-8322829 A 1
North is one of the four compass points or cardinal directions. It is the opposite of south and is perpendicular to east and west. ''North'' is a noun, adjective, or adverb indicating direction or geography. Etymology The word ''north'' is related to the Old High German ''nord'', both descending from the Proto-Indo-European unit *''ner-'', meaning "left; below" as north is to left when facing the rising sun. Similarly, the other cardinal directions are also related to the sun's position. The Latin word ''borealis'' comes from the Greek '' boreas'' "north wind, north", which, according to Ovid, was personified as the wind-god Boreas, the father of Calais and Zetes. ''Septentrionalis'' is from ''septentriones'', "the seven plow oxen", a name of ''Ursa Major''. The Greek ἀρκτικός (''arktikós'') is named for the same constellation, and is the source of the English word ''Arctic''. Other languages have other derivations. For example, in Lezgian, ''kefer'' can mean b ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Avannaa
Avannaa, originally Nordgrønland ("North Greenland"), was one of the three counties ( da, amt) of Greenland, until 31 December 2008. The county seat was at the main settlement, Qaanaaq. It was one of the least-densely-populated administrative divisions in the world, with 843 people living in 106,700 km2 of ice-free land for a density of 0.0079 people per square kilometre. The total land area including the land covered by the ice cap is over 500,000 km2. North Greenland has a higher portion of ice-free land than most other areas of the country because much of the extreme north, such as Peary Land, is largely ice-free due to its low precipitation."The CIA World Factbook 2008" Central Intelligence Agency, Skyhorse Publishing Inc, 2007, , pg, 253 The county was also sometimes known as ''Avannaarsua'' or ''Avanersuaq''. Former local divisions *Qaanaaq municipality, created 1 January 1963 *Thule Air Base (Pituffik) (unincorporated), an enclave surrounded by Qaanaaq Mun ... Polar Climate
The polar climate regions are characterized by a lack of warm summers but with varying winters. Every month in a polar climate has an average temperature of less than . Regions with polar climate cover more than 20% of the Earth's area. Most of these regions are far from the equator and near the poles, and in this case, winter days are extremely short and summer days are extremely long (could last for the entirety of each season or longer). A polar climate consists of cool summers and very cold winters, which results in treeless tundra, glaciers, or a permanent or semi-permanent layer of ice. It is identified with the letter E in the Köppen climate classification. Subtypes There are two types of polar climate: ET, or tundra climate; and EF, or ice cap climate. A tundra climate is characterized by having at least one month whose average temperature is above , while an ice cap climate has no months averaging above . In a tundra climate, even coniferous trees cannot grow, but o ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Freuchen Land
Freuchen Land is a peninsula in far northwestern Greenland. It is a part of the Northeast Greenland National Park. History Freuchen Land was named after Arctic explorer Peter Freuchen (1886–1957), who took part in the 1906–1908 Denmark expedition and later in Knud Rasmussen's Thule expeditions. Geography Freuchen Land is located to the northeast of Nares Land, south of Sverdrup Island, and west of Nansen Land and the Hans Tausen Ice Cap. Its westernmost headland is Cape Wegener. The peninsula is bounded to the west by the Nordenskiöld Fjord and to the east by the J.P. Koch Fjord. Navarana Fjord, a branch of J.P. Koch Fjord, cuts deeply southwards into the peninsula, nearly dividing it in two. This fjord was named after Peter Freuchen's Inuit wife, Navarana Mequpaluk (died 1921) To the southeast lie the Henson Gletscher and the Expedition Glacier which have their terminus at the J.P. The sea was named after Robert Todd Lincoln, then United States Secretary of War, on Adolphus W. Greely's 1881–1884 Arctic expedition into Lady Franklin Bay. Alert, the northernmost station of Canada, is the only populated place on the shore of Lincoln Sea. The body of water to the east of Lincoln Sea (east of Cape Morris Jesup) is the Wandel Sea.
