Nares Land
Nares Land or Naresland is an island in far northern Greenland. The island is named after Polar explorer Sir George Nares. Geography The island lies between the Victoria Fjord and the Nordenskjöld Fjord separated from the Freuchen Land Peninsula of the mainland by a narrow sound. Stephenson Island and John Murray Island lie off its northern end. Nares Land is fairly large, with an area of and a shoreline of . It is long and up to wide in its widest place. It has an average elevation of and its highest point is . The area where the island lies has a severe Polar climate and was formerly part of Avannaa, originally ''Nordgrønland'' ("North Greenland"), a former county of Greenland until 31 December 2008. George Nares
Vice-Admiral Sir George Strong Nares (24 April 1831 – 15 January 1915) was a Royal Navy officer and Arctic explorer. He commanded the ''Challenger'' Expedition, and the British Arctic Expedition. He was highly thought of as a leader and scientific explorer. In later life he worked for the Board of Trade and as Acting Conservator of the River Mersey. Biography Family He was born on 24 April 1831, the third son and sixth child of Commander William Henry Nares, a British naval officer, and Elizabeth Rebecca Gould, at Llansenseld, near Abergavenny in Monmouthshire. He was baptised at the church of St Bridget, Llansanffraid on 22 May. He married Mary Grant, the eldest daughter of a Portsmouth banker, on 22 June 1858. They had four sons and six daughters. His two youngest sons, George Edward Nares and John Dodd Nares entered the Royal Navy. Stephenson Island ( da, Stephenson Ø) is a small, uninhabited island in the Victoria Fjord of the Lincoln Sea, which is part of the Arctic Ocean. Peary Land is a peninsula in northern Greenland, extending into the Arctic Ocean. Avannaa
Avannaa, originally Nordgrønland ("North Greenland"), was one of the three counties ( da, amt) of Greenland, until 31 December 2008. The county seat was at the main settlement, Qaanaaq. It was one of the least-densely-populated administrative divisions in the world, with 843 people living in 106,700 km2 of ice-free land for a density of 0.0079 people per square kilometre. The total land area including the land covered by the ice cap is over 500,000 km2. Polar Climate
The polar climate regions are characterized by a lack of warm summers but with varying winters. Every month in a polar climate has an average temperature of less than . Regions with polar climate cover more than 20% of the Earth's area. Most of these regions are far from the equator and near the poles, and in this case, winter days are extremely short and summer days are extremely long (could last for the entirety of each season or longer). Freuchen Land
Freuchen Land is a peninsula in far northwestern Greenland. It is a part of the Northeast Greenland National Park. History Freuchen Land was named after Arctic explorer Peter Freuchen (1886–1957), who took part in the 1906–1908 Denmark expedition and later in Knud Rasmussen's Thule expeditions. Geography Freuchen Land is located to the northeast of Nares Land, south of Sverdrup Island, and west of Nansen Land and the Hans Tausen Ice Cap. Its westernmost headland is Cape Wegener. The peninsula is bounded to the west by the Nordenskiöld Fjord and to the east by the J.P. Koch Fjord. Navarana Fjord, a branch of J.P. Lincoln Sea
Lincoln Sea (french: Mer de Lincoln; da, Lincolnhavet) is a body of water in the Arctic Ocean, stretching from Cape Columbia, Canada, in the west to Cape Morris Jesup, Greenland, in the east. Victoria Fjord
Victoria Fjord, also known as Victoria Inlet, is a large fjord in northern Greenland. Its eastern shore forms the western limit of Peary Land. Geography To the northwest the fjord opens into the Lincoln Sea of the Arctic Ocean. Wulff Land forms the western shore of the fjord. The C. H. Ostenfeld Glacier has its terminus at the head of the fjord.
