Nar (album)
Najm Allal ( ar, الناجم علال, born 1966) is a singer, guitarist and writer of lyrics in Spanish from Western Sahara. Biography Life He was born in a nomadic family at the ''Ued'' Hawa, near Smara (Western Sahara) in 1966. All his brothers and sisters do poetry, and his brother Mohamed Lamin and Najm were musicians. His father worked in a Spanish company who constructed a road in the zone. In 1975, he fled with all his family to Tifariti, then Mahbes and finally Tindouf. The next year he started school in the Sahrawi refugee camps. He takes secondary education in Algerian high schools. When he finished his studies, he had to do military service, where he learned the accordion and acoustic guitar. He subsequently joined the SPLA in 1986, as part of the Sahrawi military band. Smara
Smara ( ar, السمارة ''as-Samāra'', also romanized ''Semara''; es, Esmara) is a city in the Moroccan-controlled part of Western Sahara, with a population of 57,035 recorded in the 2014 Moroccan census. It is served by Smara Airport and Smara bus station. History The largest city in its province, Smara was founded in the Saguia el-Hamra as an oasis for travellers in 1869. In the center of the city the remains of a stone fortress can be found, the Zawiy Maalainin, which enclosed a mosque. The Maalainin lived there from 1830 until 1912. It was made a capital and religious center in 1902 by shaykh Ma al-'Aynayn, in what was then Spanish Sahara. The location of the city was intended to ensure its becoming a caravan trade hub in the sparsely populated Sahara desert. A military band is a group of personnel that performs musical duties for military functions, usually for the armed forces. A typical military band consists mostly of wind and percussion instruments. The Western Sahara has an established music tradition. Many of the well-known from the country musicians have settled in Dakar, where they mingled further with musicians from West Africa. Sahrawi music shares much in common with neighbouring musical traditions such as those of Mauritania and southern Morocco, yet retain aspects of pre-colonial heritage. The Tbal is the basic instrument of percussion, though the traditional string instrument called Tidinit, has largely been replaced by electric guitar. The first Sahrawi music LP, titled ''Polisario vencerá'', was recorded live in Barcelona, in 1982 by the band Shahid El Uali. Some performers are tribespeople who have lived a nomadic existence, which is true of Mariem Hassan.
