Napoléon Désaulniers
J.-H.-Napoléon Désaulniers (1875-1958) was a local politician in Shawinigan, Quebec. He served two non-consecutive terms as the sixth Mayor of Shawinigan.Fabien LaRochelle, Shawinigan depuis 75 ans, 1976 He was born in 1875 in Nicolet, Centre-du-Québec. He was a Conservative machine politician and was a notary. Désaulniers served as a council member in Shawinigan from 1911 to 1913. He also was the mayor of the city from 1918 to 1920 and 1928 to 1930. He was in office when World War I came to an end. He died in Shawinigan in 1958. ''Avenue Désaulniers'' near ''Collège de Shawinigan'' was named to honour him. Nicolet () is the county seat of Nicolet-Yamaska Regional County Municipality, Quebec, Canada. The population as of the Canada 2016 Census was 8,169. It is the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Nicolet. The residents of the town pronounce the final "t" in Nicolet, however people outside of the region do not. History The town took its name from Jean Nicolet, a French explorer and clerk of the Company of One Hundred Associates, who explored the Great Lakes region west to Wisconsin. Mauricie () is a traditional and current administrative region of Quebec. La Mauricie National Park is contained within the region, making it a prime tourist location. The region has a land area of 35,860.05 km² (13,845.64 sq mi) and a population of 266,112 residents as of the 2016 Census. Its largest cities are Trois-Rivières and Shawinigan. The word ''Mauricie'' was coined by local priest and historian Albert Tessier and is based on the Saint-Maurice river which runs through the region on a North-South axis. Joseph-Auguste Frigon (7 February 1870 – 14 February 1944) was a local entrepreneur and politician in the Mauricie area. He served as the fourth Mayor of Shawinigan, Quebec and as Member of the Legislative Assembly. Early life He was born in 1870 in Saint-Prosper, Mauricie, Quebec. Municipal Politics Frigon was Mayor of Saint-Narcisse, Quebec from 1896 to 1899. He moved to Shawinigan in the early 1900s for business reasons and ran for Mayor of that city against Beaudry Leman in 1902 but lost the election by a single ballot. Frigon ran again in 1913 and won. Joseph-Alexis Dufresne
Joseph-Alexis Dufresne was a local politician in Shawinigan, Quebec. He was the seventh Mayor of Shawinigan from 1920 to 1928. He was born in 1869 near Portneuf, Quebec and was a physician. He moved to Shawinigan in 1901. Dufresne served as school board member and also as council member from 1902 to 1906 and 1911 to 1913. He ran for Mayor in Shawinigan in 1920 and won. He was re-elected in 1922, 1924 and 1926. Under his administration, the following institutions or facilities were put into place: * Chamber of Commerce and Industrie of Shawinigan; * Fire station #1 (Place du Marché, Downtown); * Fire station #2 (2023, avenue Champlain); * Parc Saint-Marc; * Union musicale de Shawinigan (the local philharmonic choir).
