Joseph-Alexis Dufresne
Joseph-Alexis Dufresne was a local politician in Shawinigan, Quebec. He was the seventh Mayor of Shawinigan from 1920 to 1928. He was born in 1869 near Portneuf, Quebec and was a physician. He moved to Shawinigan in 1901. Dufresne served as school board member and also as council member from 1902 to 1906 and 1911 to 1913. He ran for Mayor in Shawinigan in 1920 and won. He was re-elected in 1922, 1924 and 1926. Under his administration, the following institutions or facilities were put into place: * Chamber of Commerce and Industrie of Shawinigan; * Fire station #1 (Place du Marché, Downtown); * Fire station #2 (2023, avenue Champlain); * Parc Saint-Marc; * Union musicale de Shawinigan (the local philharmonic choir). Dufresne was the Conservative candidate in the provincial district of Saint-Maurice in the 1908, 1912, 1919 and 1923 elections. Each time he lost. He left active politics in 1928 for health reasons. Portneuf, Quebec
Portneuf is a municipality in the Portneuf Regional County Municipality, in the province of Quebec, Canada. It is located on the Saint Lawrence River, between Quebec City and Trois-Rivières. The Portneuf River runs on the east side of the town centre. The town of Portneuf is named after a seignory that was founded in 1636, and first settled in 1640. The municipal territory consists of 2 non-contiguous areas, separated by the municipality of Sainte-Christine-d'Auvergne. The smaller northern portion is undeveloped, whereas the southern piece is the main inhabited part with the population centres of Portneuf (south of Autoroute 40), and the adjacent Notre-Dame-de-Portneuf, north of A-40. The present-day municipality was created in 2002, when the old city of Portneuf merged with the town of Notre-Dame-de-Portneuf. The Conservative Party of Quebec (french: Parti conservateur du Québec) was a political party in Quebec, Canada, from 1867 until 1936, when it merged with members of the Action libérale nationale to form the Union Nationale. Saint-Maurice (provincial Electoral District)
Saint-Maurice is a provincial electoral district located in the Mauricie region of Quebec, Canada. It includes part of the city of Shawinigan; it does not, however, include the parish municipality of Saint-Maurice, Quebec, Saint-Maurice (although it borders on it). It was created for the 1867 Quebec general election, 1867 election, and an electoral district of that name existed even earlier: see Saint-Maurice (Lower Canada) and Saint-Maurice (Province of Canada). In the change from the 2001 to the 2011 electoral map, its territory was unchanged. The incumbent Quebec Liberal Party, led by Lomer Gouin, was re-elected, defeating the Quebec Conservative Party, led by Arthur Sauvé. The 1923 Quebec general election was held on February 5, 1923, to elect members of the 16th Legislative Assembly of Quebec, Canada. The incumbent Quebec Liberal Party, led by Louis-Alexandre Taschereau, was re-elected, defeating the Conservative Party of Quebec (historical), Quebec Conservative Party, led by Arthur Sauvé. Mauricie
Mauricie () is a traditional and current administrative region of Quebec. La Mauricie National Park is contained within the region, making it a prime tourist location. The region has a land area of 35,860.05 km² (13,845.64 sq mi) and a population of 266,112 residents as of the 2016 Census. Its largest cities are Trois-Rivières and Shawinigan. The word ''Mauricie'' was coined by local priest and historian Albert Tessier and is based on the Saint-Maurice river which runs through the region on a North-South axis. Mauricie administrative region was created on August 20, 1997 from the split of Mauricie–Bois-Francs administrative region into Mauricie and Centre-du-Québec.
