Nancy Guptill
Nancy Evelyn Guptill (April 28, 1941August 24, 2020) was a Canadian politician from Prince Edward Island (PEI). She served in its Legislative Assembly from 1987 to 2000. A member of the provincial Liberal Party, she represented the electoral districts of 5th Prince from 1987 to 1996 and St. Eleanors-Summerside from 1996 to 2000. She was noted for being part of PEI's Famous Five when she was elected speaker in 1993. Early life Guptill was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on April 28, 1941. She was the daughter of Lloyd and Evelyn Garrison. Guptill was educated at the Halifax Vocational School and the Victoria General Hospital. She married L.R. Gregg Guptill in 1964. Together, they had three daughters. The family eventually relocated to Summerside on Prince Edward Island in 1975. 2000 Prince Edward Island General Election
The 2000 Prince Edward Island general election was held on April 17, 2000 to elect the 27 members of the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island. Premier Pat Binns' Progressive Conservative Party was elected to its second straight majority, winning every seat but one. This was an increase of eight seats from the previous election. The Liberal Party, led by rookie leader Wayne Carew, only won one seat, and Carew lost his own by a substantial margin. The New Democratic Party, led by Herb Dickieson, increased their popular vote from the previous election, but lost their only seat (Dickieson's own). Pipe Bomb
A pipe bomb is an improvised explosive device which uses a tightly sealed section of pipe (material), pipe filled with an explosive material. Province House is where the Prince Edward Island Legislature, known as the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island, has met since 1847. The building is located at the intersection of Richmond and Great George Streets in Charlottetown; it is Canada's second-oldest seat of government. History The cornerstone was laid in May 1843 and it commenced operation for the first time in January 1847. The entire structure was built for a cost of £10,000 and was designed by Isaac Smith. Libbe Hubley
Elizabeth M. "Libbe" Hubley (born September 8, 1942) is a Canadian politician who sat in the Senate of Canada representing Prince Edward Island from 2001 until her retirement in 2017. In 1989 she was elected to Prince Edward Island's legislative assembly as a Liberal. She was re-elected in 1993 and served as Deputy Speaker of the legislature from 1993 to 1996. On March 8, 2001, Hubley was appointed to the Canadian Senate on the advice of Prime Minister Jean Chrétien. Beginning in 2006, she was the Deputy Whip of the Liberal Party. On January 29, 2014, Liberal Party leader Justin Trudeau announced all Liberal Senators, including Hubley, were removed from the Liberal caucus, and would continue sitting as Independents. Patricia Janet Mella (born August 29, 1943) is a Canadian politician and former teacher. Mella was Prince Edward Island Progressive Conservative Party (PC) leader from 1990 to 1996 and an elected member of the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island from 1993 to 2003. She was born Patricia McDougall in Port Hill, Prince Edward Island (along with her twin sister, Peggy) and was educated at Saint Dunstan's University and the University of Prince Edward Island. A teacher and lecturer, she married Angelo Mella while teaching at St. Patrick's College in Ottawa. Mella entered political life, having been an unsuccessful candidate in the 1989 provincial election as a member of the Prince Edward Island Progressive Conservative Party.
