Naftali Loewenthal
Naftali Loewenthal is a Jewish academic from England, and a member of the Chabad Hasidic community. Loewenthal's main area of study is Hasidism and Jewish Mysticism, he serves as a professor in the Department of Hebrew and Jewish Studies at University College London, and the director of the Chabad Research Unit, a division of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement in the United Kingdom. Loewenthal is noted as the author of ''Communicating the Infinite: The Emergence of the Habad School'' (1990), an important work on the scholarship of Hasdisim; he has also authored ''Hasidism Beyond Modernity: Essays in Habad Thought and History'' (2019) as well as many scholarly articles and publications on the Chabad philosophy, Chabad mysticism. Chabad
Chabad, also known as Lubavitch, Habad and Chabad-Lubavitch (), is an Orthodox Jewish Hasidic dynasty. Chabad is one of the world's best-known Hasidic movements, particularly for its outreach activities. It is one of the largest Hasidic groups and Jewish religious organizations in the world. Jewish Mysticism
Academic study of Jewish mysticism, especially since Gershom Scholem's ''Major Trends in Jewish Mysticism'' (1941), distinguishes between different forms of mysticism across different eras of Jewish history. Of these, Kabbalah, which emerged in 12th-century Europe, is the most well known, but not the only typologic form, or the earliest to emerge. Among previous forms were Merkabah mysticism (c. 100 BCE – 1000 CE), and Ashkenazi Hasidim (early 13th century) around the time of Kabbalistic emergence. Kabbalah means "received tradition", a term previously used in other Judaic contexts, but which the Medieval Kabbalists adopted for their own doctrine to express the belief that they were not innovating, but merely revealing the ancient hidden esoteric tradition of the Torah. Chabad Philosophy
Chabad philosophy comprises the teachings of the leaders of Chabad-Lubavitch, a Hasidic movement. Chabad Hasidic philosophy focuses on religious concepts such as God, the soul, and the meaning of the Jewish commandments. Teachings are often drawn from classical Judaic teachings and Jewish mysticism. Classical Judaic writings and Jewish mysticism, especially the Zohar and the Kabbalah of Rabbi Isaac Luria, are frequently cited in Chabad works. Bonnie Morris
Bonnie J. Morris (born May 14, 1961; Los Angeles, California) is an American scholar of women's studies. She completed a PhD in women's history at Binghamton University in 1989 and has taught at various universities including Georgetown University, George Washington University, and University of California, Berkeley.
