NTH Ring
{{Short description, Ring worn by graduates of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology The NTH Ring, known by many names in Norway. The NTH-ringen, first known as Høiskoleringen, also known as Ringen, Sivilingeniørringen, NTNU/NTH-ringen or Master-ringen, is worn only by graduates of the former '' sivilingeniør'' or ''sivilarkitekt'' programmes, now graduates of the Master of Science in engineering or architecture programmes, at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), formerly known as NTH (Norwegian Institute of Technology). The ring was designed by architectural student Tormod Kristoffer Hustad, who had won an international competition in 1914. Sivilingeniør
Sivilingeniør (shortened siv.ing), not to be confused with civil engineer, is a legally protected engineering title awarded by technical universities in Norway. To qualify for the title, a student must follow a structured study programme in technology and natural sciences of 5 years duration (4.5 years before 2002) at a Norwegian university or university college. Previously it was also a degree in and of itself, though today it is the equivalent of a Master of Science or Master of Technology degree. Before 1992, it was considered by the Norwegian Institute of Technology (NTH) to be equivalent to a Master of Science degree. Although the name is cognate with the English term '' civil engineer'', the meanings do not correspond in modern usage. The degree was not awarded in 2002, when the study program's length was expanded by six months, instead the title Master of Technology was used. Norwegian Institute Of Technology
The Norwegian Institute of Technology (Norwegian: ''Norges tekniske høgskole'', NTH) was a science institute in Trondheim, Norway. It was established in 1910, and existed as an independent technical university for 58 years, after which it was merged into the University of Trondheim as an independent college. In 1996 NTH ceased to exist as an organizational superstructure when the university was restructured and rebranded. The former NTH departments are now basic building blocks of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). NTH was primarily a polytechnic institute, educating master level engineers as well as architects. Tormod Kristoffer Hustad (15 February 1889 – 19 August 1973) was the Norwegian minister of agriculture in the 1940 pro-Nazi puppet government of Vidkun Quisling, provisional councilor of state for agriculture in the government appointed by Reichskommissar Josef Terboven in 1940, and minister of labour in the NS government 1942–1944. He was replaced by Hans Skarphagen Hans Skarphagen (8 September 1888 – 10 February 1971) was a Norwegian engineer and NS politician. He was a professor at the Norwegian Institute of Technology. Engineer's Ring
The Engineer's Ring is a ring worn by members of the United States Order of the Engineer, a fellowship of engineers who must be a certified Professional Engineer or graduated from an accredited engineering program (or be within one academic year of graduation to participate). The ring is usually a stainless steel band worn on the little finger of the dominant hand. This is so that it makes contact with all work done by the engineer. Rings used to be cast in iron in the most unattractive and simple form to show the nature of work. The ring is symbolic of the oath taken by the wearer, and symbolizes the unity of the profession in its goal of benefitting mankind.
