NHS Grampian
NHS Grampian is an NHS board which forms one of the fourteen regional health boards of NHS Scotland. It is responsible for proving health and social care services to a population of over 500,000 people living in Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire and Moray. NHS Grampian is also very closely linked with both the University of Aberdeen and The Robert Gordon University, especially in the fields of research, workforce planning and training. History The health board was formed on 1 April 2004 by the amalgamation of Grampian University Hospitals NHS Trust, Grampian Primary Care NHS Trust and Grampian Health Board. The health board's headquarters are located at Summerfield House in the Summerhill, Aberdeen, Summerhill area of Aberdeen. Royal Cornhill Hospital
Royal Cornhill Hospital is a psychiatric hospital in Westburn Road, Aberdeen, Scotland. It is managed by NHS Grampian. History The hospital was founded as the Aberdeen Lunatic Asylum in 1800. The city's dancing master, Francis Peacock, donated all the funds from the profits of his 1805 book on dancing to the asylum and an enlarged facility designed by Archibald Simpson opened in 1818. It was renamed the Aberdeen Royal Lunatic Asylum in 1852 and a new hospital for sick and acute cases was built to the north of the existing facility in 1896. Pavilions for the treatment of tuberculosis were added in the 1920s and the facility became the Aberdeen Royal Mental Hospital in 1933. It suffered from bomb damage, which resulted in four fatalities, in 1943 during the Second World War. The facility joined the National Health Service in 1948 and became the Royal Cornhill Hospital in 1964. Aberdeen Maternity Hospital
Aberdeen Maternity Hospital (AMH) is a specialist maternity hospital in Aberdeen, Scotland. Between 4,000 and 5,000 babies are born at AMH each year. The hospital is located in the Foresterhill area of Aberdeen and serves the region of Grampian as well as the islands of Shetland and Orkney. It is managed by NHS Grampian. History The hospital has its origins in the a small facility established at Guestrow in 1870. It moved to Barrett's Close in 1893 and to Castle Street in 1900. The move to a new building, which was designed by James Brown Nicol and built between 1934 and 1937, formed part of the Aberdeen Joint Hospitals Scheme as envisaged by Professor Matthew Hay, which involved the development of an integrated medical campus at Foresterhill. Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital
The Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital or RACH is a children's hospital in Aberdeen, Scotland. It is situated on the Foresterhill site, with the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and Aberdeen Maternity Hospital and provides services to children across the North of Scotland. It is managed by NHS Grampian. History The hospital has its origins in a private house at Castle Hill which opened in 1877. It was evacuated to Kepplestone House during the First World War. It moved to a new facility which was designed by William Kelly and opened on the Foresterhill site in 1928. After the hospital had been completely rebuilt to modern standards, it re-opened in January 2004. In 2012 the hospital revised its policy around the age of patients who could be admitted for care, raising the limit from 14 to 16 years of age. NHS Board
The National Health Service (NHS) is the umbrella term for the publicly funded health care, publicly funded healthcare systems of the United Kingdom (UK). Since 1948, they have been funded out of general taxation. Roxburghe House
Roxburghe House is a specialist palliative care unit which is situated near Foresterhill, Aberdeen, Scotland. It is managed by NHS Grampian. History Roxburghe House was established as a hospice and palliative care facility within the grounds of Tor-na-Dee Hospital site at Milltimber in Aberdeen in 1977. Princess Diana visited Roxburghe House in March 1985 and a day care unit was added in 1990. It moved to a purpose-built facility located to the east of the Foresterhill health campus in 2004. In September 2012 an extended garden area, which provides a peaceful and private area for patients and families, was unveiled. Services The facility has a multi-disciplinary team approach to providing care for patients. The team has three consultants, several specialist nurses and a team of trained and untrained nurses. Woodend Hospital
Woodend Hospital is a health facility located in the Woodend area of Aberdeen, Scotland. It is managed by NHS Grampian. History The hospital, which was designed by Brown & Watt, opened as the Old Mill Poorhouse and Infirmary in May 1907. It became a military hospital during the First World War. The hospital was taken over by Aberdeen Town Council and reopened as Woodend Municipal Hospital in October 1927. A special block was erected for the treatment of non-pulmonary tuberculosis, pneumonia and similar cases. A new nurses' home was added in 1936 and the hospital joined the National Health Service in 1948. During the 1964 Aberdeen typhoid outbreak, over 400 cases were diagnosed and the patients were quarantined at the City Hospital and Woodend Hospital, although no fatalities resulted. Ugie Hospital
Ugie Hospital is a small hospital in Peterhead, Scotland, providing psychogeriatric services. It is managed by NHS Grampian. History The foundation stone for the facility was laid in June 1905 and it opened as the local infectious diseases hospital in 1907. In 2004, the Ravenscraig geriatric ward at the hospital was closed to new admissions because of an outbreak of MRSA among the elderly patients. Eight of the 13 patients were found to be carriers of the bacteria, although none of the patients was actually infected. In August 2005 Aberdeenshire Community Health Partnership issued a consultation document on Older People’s Services, Maternity Services and Diagnostic and Treatment Services, one of which would have allowed "the relocation of all psychogeriatric services out of Ugie Hospital and enable it to be closed".
