United States lightship ''Nantucket'' (LV-112) is a National Historic Landmark lightship that served at the Lightship Nantucket position. She was the last serving lightship and at time of its application as a landmark, one of only two capable of moving under their own power. She served as the lightship for such notable vessels as the liners , , and . The ship was officially designated Light Vessel No. 112 or ''LV-112'' to permanently identify the vessel as the practice was to paint the name of the marked hazard or station on the vessels that often occupied multiple stations. ''LV-112'' was built to replace ''LV-117'' which had been sunk in a collision while assigned to Nantucket Shoals with special safety features and was the largest light vessel ever built. The station named ''Nantucket'' or ''Nantucket Shoals'' was served by a number of lightvessels (also termed lightships) that marked the hazardous Nantucket Shoals south of Nantucket Island. The vessels, given numbers as their "name," had the station name painted on their hulls when assigned to the station. Several ships have been assigned to the Nantucket Shoals lightship station and have been called ''Nantucket''. It was common for a lightship to be reassigned and then have the new station name painted on the hull. The Nantucket station was a significant US lightship station for transatlantic crossing, transatlantic voyages. Established in 1854, the station marked the limits of the dangerous Nantucket Shoals. The Nantucket Lightship or United States Lightship WLV-612 (''Nantucket I'') is a lightvessel commissioned in 1950 that became the last lightship decommissioned in United States Coast Guard service. History The ''Nantucket Lightship'' was launched in 1950 and put into service in 1951 as the ''San Francisco Lightship'', 8.6 miles offshore of the Point Bonita Lighthouse and the Golden Gate where it was in service until 1969. From 1969 to 1971, it served as the ''Blunts Reef Lightship'' at Blunt's Freed near the Cape Mendocino Light in Northern California. From 1971 to 1975 it served as the ''Portland Lightship'' marking the entrance to Portland, Maine. Brenton Reef Light
The Brenton Reef Light was a Texas tower lighthouse at the entrance to Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, United States, south of Beavertail Point. Erected to replace a lightship in 1962, it was decommissioned in 1989 due to its deteriorating condition. History This offshore station was marked by a succession of lightships beginning in 1853, with new vessels being assigned to the station in 1856, 1897, and 1935. Buzzards Bay is a bay of the Atlantic Ocean adjacent to the U.S. state of Massachusetts. It is approximately 28 miles (45 kilometers) long by 8 miles (12 kilometers) wide. Pollock Rip Shoal
The channel at Pollock Rip Shoals is centered about three miles east of the southerly end of Monomoy Island in Chatham, Massachusetts. The channel, which runs east-west, is about eight miles south of the Chatham Lighthouse.
