N. B. Nemmers
Nicholas B. Nemmers (March 15, 1852 - February 3, 1923) was a teacher, merchant, public official and legislator from La Motte, Iowa. Background Nemmers was born in St. Donatus in Jackson County, Iowa on March 15, 1852. He attended the local public schools, and attended Pio Nono College, a Catholic men's normal school outside Milwaukee, graduating in 1874. He taught school in Jackson County until 1882, when he became a merchant in La Motte, which remained his primary occupation until his death. On July 5, 1876 he married Elizabeth Manders of St. Donatus; they would have eleven children together. La Motte, Iowa
La Motte is a small city in northern Jackson County, Iowa, United States. The population was 237 at the time of the 2020 census. History La Motte was planned in 1873, and the town voted to incorporate in 1879. It is named after Alexander La Motte, one of its founders. In 1878, La Motte contained two stores, a Methodist church, a Masonic lodge, and a carriage factory. Two sites in La Motte are listed on the National Register of Historic Places: the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Narrow Gauge Depot, and the Harris Wagon and Carriage Shop. Jackson County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. As of the 2020 census, the population was 19,485. The county seat is Maquoketa. History The county was formed on December 21, 1837, and named after US President Andrew Jackson. In the early morning of July 22, 2022, an assailant killed three members of a family at the campground of Maquoketa Caves State Park, located in the county. The assailant, identified as 23-year-old Anthony Sherwin of Nebraska, later committed suicide. Pio Nono College (Wisconsin)
The Catholic Normal School and Pio Nono College, also known as Holy Family Normal School, was a paired institution (sharing the same faculty) in St. Francis, Wisconsin, which also included a high school component, founded in 1870 by Dr. Joseph Salzmann as the first Catholic normal school in the United States. The Normal School specialized in training young men in music education for Catholic boys' schools, while Pio Nono was a business school. School for the deaf St. John's School for the Deaf was founded as part of Pio Nono in 1876 as the Catholic Deaf and Dumb Asylum. In its first year, the 17 students classes were held in the second floor of the Pio Nono gymnasium.
