N-45 National Highway
The National Highway 45 (), also known as the N-45 or the Nowshera-Chitral Highway, is one of the National Highways of Pakistan, running from Nowshera District to the town of Chitral via Dir in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. It is a two-lane highway with a total length of 309 km. It is maintained and operated by the National Highway Authority. A tunnel on the highway, Lowari Tunnel reduced 14-hour drive from Chitral to Peshawar by 7 hours. It also reduced the time and effort it takes moving from Chitral to southern parts of Pakistan in winter season when Lowari Top is closed due to snow and people of Chitral have to travel from Afghanistan and then enter back in Pakistan. Nowshera District ( ps, نوښار ولسوالۍ, ur, ) is a district in Peshawar Division of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in Pakistan. The capital and district headquarter is Nowshera city. Overview and history Nowshera was a tehsil (sub division) of Peshawar until 1988, when it became a district. Dir Pakistan
Dir (Urdu, ps, ) is a city in Upper Dir District, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province, Pakistan at an elevation of 1420 m. It is sometimes known as Dir Khas ("Proper Dir") to distinguish it from the district. Lowari Tunnel ( ur, , ''Lowari Sarang'') is a vehicular tunnel under the Lowari Pass of the Hindu Kush mountains, between Dir and Chitral in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan. Lowari Pass
Lowari Pass ( ur, درہ لواری), or Lowari Top, (el. 10,230 ft.) is a high mountain pass that connects Chitral with Dir in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. Lowari Top is a relatively low pass, by far the lowest pass to enter Chitral, the rest all being 12,000 to 15,000 feet. Lowari Top is closed by snow from late November to late May every year. During this time, jeeps cannot cross so men must travel by foot. This is dangerous, as there are high mountains on each side of Lowari Top, and a deadly avalanche can come at any moment without warning. Every winter a few people are killed by avalanches while crossing Lowari Top. Their bodies are buried under the snow and it is only when the summer comes and the snow melts that their bodies are found and their fate learned.
