The N-400 is a highway in Spain from Toledo to Cuenca. It is being upgraded to the Autovía A-40, section by section. It starts at the junction of the N-401, and the Autovía A-42 east of Toledo. It heads east to Aranjuez and the Autopista R-4 and Autovía A-4. It then heads east with a junction to the N-301. Cuenca () is a city and municipality of Spain located in the autonomous community of Castilla–La Mancha. It is the capital of the province of Cuenca. Etymology Its name may derive from the Latin ''conca'' meaning "river basin", referring to the gorge of the rivers Júcar and Huécar. It may also be derived from the now-ruined Arab castle, Kunka. Other alternative original names have been suggested, including "Anitorgis", "Sucro" or "Concava". The Autovía A-40 is an autovía (motorway) in Castile, Spain, serving as a gradual upgrade of the N-400. The Autovía A-42 (also known as ''Autovía de Toledo'') is a Spanish autovía which connects Madrid to Toledo. It was built in the mid-1980s as an upgrade of the N-401 road between the two cities, and received the A-42 designation in 2003 as part of the general renumbering of Spanish autovías. In the mid-2000s, the Autopista AP-41 was built to supersede the A-42, though the autovía is still regularly used. Beyond Toledo, the A-42 continues through the community of Castile-La Mancha to Tomelloso as the CM-42, itself an upgrade of the CM-400.
