Mycenaceae
The Mycenaceae are a family of fungi in the order Agaricales. According to the ''Dictionary of the Fungi'' (10th edition, 2008), the family contains 10 genera and 705 species. This is one of several families that were separated from the Tricholomataceae as a result of phylogenetic analyses. Taxa in the Mycenaceae are saprobic, have a cosmopolitan distribution, and are found in almost all ecological zones. The family was circumscribed by Caspar van Overeem in 1926. The extinct genus ''Protomycena'', described from Burdigalian age Dominican amber found on the island of Hispaniola is one of four known agaric genera in the fossil record. Phylogeny A large-scale phylogenetic analysis study of the Agaricales published by a consortium of mycologists in 2002 adopted the name Mycenaceae for a strongly supported clade consisting of ''Dictyopanus'', '' Favolaschia'', ''Mycena ''Mycena'' is a large genus of small saprotrophic mushrooms that are rarely more than a few centimeters in ...

Panellus
''Panellus'' is a genus of more than 50 mushroom species of fungi in the family Mycenaceae as defined molecularly. Prior to molecular analyses the generic name had been used for any white-spored '' pleurotoid'' with amyloid spores. Unrelated but similar species are now classified in '' Sarcomyxa'' and '' Scytinotus''. In older guides and other literature the type species had been placed in either ''Pleurotus'' or ''Panus'' and the poroid species had been classified in the synonymous genus ''Dictyopanus'' or in broadly defined genera like ''Polyporus'' (Polyporaceae) or the more closely allied ''Favolaschia'' (Mycenaceae). The closest molecular allies are '' Resinomycena'' and '' Cruentomycena''. Description The fruit bodies of ''Panellus'' species are small- or medium-sized and in most cases '' pleurotoid'', meaning they grow on wood, have gills (some species have pores instead of gills), and usually form semicircular or kidney-shaped caps that may be either directly attached to t ...

Resinomycena
''Resinomycena'' is a genus of fungi in the mushroom family Mycenaceae. The genus contains at least eight species found in North America, Europe (including the United Kingdom and the Canary Islands) and eastern Asia (including Japan). This genus of small white to tan colored agarics is saprophytic and colonizes leaf litter, bark, small twigs and decaying monocot vegetation. The fruitbodies are small and resemble ''Mycena'' or ''Marasmius'' or ''Hemimycena'' and are distinguished by amyloid spores, poorly dextrinoid tissues, and the abundant oily, resinous cystidia on the pileus, lamellae edges and stipes. One recently described species, ''Resinomycena fulgens'' from Japan that is a synonym of ''Resinomycena japonica'', has luminescent Luminescence is spontaneous emission of light by a substance not resulting from heat; or "cold light". It is thus a form of cold-body radiation. It can be caused by chemical reactions, electrical energy, subatomic motions or stress on a cryst ...

Protomycena
''Protomycena'' is an extinct monotypic genus of gilled fungus in the family Mycenaceae, of order Agaricales. At present it contains the single species ''Protomycena electra'', known from a single specimen collected in an amber mine in the Cordillera Septentrional area of the Dominican Republic. The fruit body of the fungus has a convex cap that is in diameter, with distantly spaced gills on the underside. The curved stipe is smooth and cylindrical, measuring thick by long, and lacks a ring. It resembles extant (currently living) species of the genus ''Mycena''. ''Protomycena'' is one of only five known agaric fungus species known in the fossil record and the second to be described from Dominican amber. Discovery and classification The genus is known only from the holotype specimen, a single fruit body (mushroom) currently residing in the private collection owned by Ettore Morone of Turin, Italy. The specimen was collected in one of the amber mines in the Cordillera Sep ...

Favolaschia
''Favolaschia'' is a genus of fungi in the family Mycenaceae. The genus has a widespread distribution, and contains about 50 species. Like the genus Favolus, the name is derived from the Latin ''favus'' meaning ''honeycomb'', as the fungi with the large pores on the underside are resembling a honeycomb. The name was first published as a section of the obsolete genus ''Laschia'', which was named after Wilhelm Gottfried Lasch (1787-1863), who was a German apothecary and botanist. Tricholomataceae
The Tricholomataceae are a large family of mushrooms within the Agaricales. Originally a classic "wastebasket taxon", the family included any white-, yellow-, or pink-spored genera in the Agaricales not already classified as belonging to e.g. the Amanitaceae, Lepiotaceae, Hygrophoraceae, Pluteaceae, or Entolomataceae. The name derives from the Greek ''trichos'' (τριχος) meaning hair and ''loma'' (λωμα) meaning fringe or border, although not all members display this feature. The name "Tricholomataceae" is seen as having validity in describing ''Tricholoma'' and its close relatives, and whatever other genera can at some future point be described as part of a monophyletic family including ''Tricholoma''. To that end, the International Botanical Congress has voted on two occasions (1988 and 2006) to conserve the name "Tricholomataceae" against competing names. This decision does not invalidate the use of segregate families from the Tricholomataceae, but simply validates th ...
