Murmansk Philharmonic Orchestra
The Murmansk Philharmonic Orchestra is an orchestra based in Murmansk, Russia. It is currently the largest full professional orchestra in the Barents region. It is funded by the regional government of Murmansk. History The Murmansk Regional Philharmonic Society was founded in 1975, when the concert and variety bureau was reformed into a philharmonic. The Murmansk Philharmonic Orchestra has its own hall built in 1994, which was revamped in 2016 as part of a large plan for the centennial of Murmansk. In 1999, the main orchestra of the philharmonic society was formed under its current name, the Murmansk Philharmonic Orchestra, and performed under the baton of English conductor Damian Iorio. Murmansk (Russian: ''Мурманск'' lit. "Norwegian coast"; Finnish: ''Murmansk'', sometimes ''Muurmanski'', previously ''Muurmanni''; Norwegian: ''Norskekysten;'' Northern Sámi: ''Murmánska;'' Kildin Sámi: ''Мурман ланнҍ'') is a port city and the administrative center of Murmansk Oblast in the far northwest part of Russia. Barents Region
The Barents Region is a name given, by advocates of establishing international cooperation after the fall of the Soviet Union, to the land along the coast of the Barents Sea, from Nordland in Norway to the Kola Peninsula in Russia and beyond all the way to the Ural Mountains and Novaya Zemlya, and south to the Gulf of Bothnia of the Baltic Sea and the great lakes Ladoga and Onega. Among the projects is the Barents Road from Bodø in Norway through Haparanda in Sweden and Finland to Murmansk in Russia. One concrete sign of the increased communication within the region is the establishment in 2006 of an IKEA store in Haparanda (Sweden), targeting customers 500 km away in Murmansk and northern Norway. Damian Iorio
Damian Iorio (born 1972) is a British-Italian conductor. Early life and education Born in London, Iorio is the son of violinist Diana Cummings and viola player Luciano Iorio. Iorio's uncle is Douglas Cummings, the former principal cello of the London Symphony Orchestra. He began violin studies as a young child with Sheila Nelson. While an undergraduate violin student of Yossi Zivoni at the Royal Northern College of Music, Iorio began conducting studies and participated in conducting masterclasses with Ilya Musin. He completed violin studies at Indiana University, USA with Franco Gulli. Iorio went on to study conducting at Saint Petersburg Conservatory with Ilya Musin and Alexander Polishchuk. At the same time, he held a position in the first violin section of the Danish National Symphony Orchestra. The Order "For Merit to the Fatherland" (russian: Орден «За заслуги перед Отечеством», ''Orden "Za zaslugi pered Otechestvom"'') is a state decoration of the Russian Federation. It was instituted on 2 March 1994 by Presidential Decree 442. Until the re-establishment of the Order of St. Andrew in 1998, it was the highest order of the Russian Federation. ''Tosca'' is an opera in three acts by Giacomo Puccini to an Italian libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa. It premiered at the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, Teatro Costanzi in Rome on 14 January 1900.
