Mr. Brown Coffee () is a series of canned coffee products produced by King Car Group of Taiwan. It was launched in 1982. Mr. Brown Coffee is sold in 240ml steel cans and 330ml plastic bottles. Varieties include original, espresso, cappuccino, vanilla, Colombian, Macadamia nut, Black and Blue Mountain Style. As part of the 2008 Chinese milk scandal, it was discovered that the same melamine-contaminated milk was being used for Mr. Brown instant coffee mixes. King Car Group
The King Car Group is a Taiwanese conglomerate which owns a number of international brands such as the Kavalan Distillery and Mr. Brown Coffee. Name The name King Car is a rough translation of the Chinese "to drive wealth." History The King Car Group was founded in 1979 by Lee Tien-Tsai and at first sold root beer. Root beer was not lucrative and in 1982 King Car pivoted to canned coffee, setting up the Mr. Browns brand on the advice of a Japanese mentor of Lee. By the mid 1990s the Mr. Brown brand was dominant domestically and was expanding internationally. In 1995 King Car tried to enter the alcohol market for the first time but their plans were rejected by the government which at the time held a monopoly on alcohol production. 2008 Chinese Milk Scandal
The 2008 Chinese milk scandal was a significant Food safety incidents in China, food safety incident in China. The scandal involved Sanlu Group, Sanlu Group's milk and infant formula along with other food materials and components being adulterant, adulterated with the chemical melamine, which resulted in kidney stones and other renal failure, kidney damage in infants. The chemical was used to increase the nitrogen content of diluted milk, giving it the appearance of higher protein content in order to pass quality control testing. 300,000 affected children were identified, among which 54,000 were hospitalized, according to the latest report in January 2009. Melamine is an organic compound with the formula C3H6N6. This white solid is a trimer of cyanamide, with a 1,3,5-triazine skeleton. Like cyanamide, it contains 67% nitrogen by mass, and its derivatives have fire retardant properties due to its release of nitrogen gas when burned or charred.
