Mpungu
Mpungu is a settlement and a former mission station of the Finnish Missionary Society in the Mpungu Constituency in the Kavango West Region in Northern Namibia. It is located ca. 40 km south-west of Nkurenkuru and is inland as opposed to other former Finnish mission stations, which were located along the Kavango River. Today, a tarred highway from Ovamboland to Kavango connects Mpungu to other places in northern Namibia. History of Mpungu The mission station was founded in 1951 by Hellin Elomaa, a nurse, who also founded a small clinic there. In Mpungu, the Finnish missionaries were also in touch with the local San population. Infrastructure Today there is still a health centre in Mpungu, as well as the Himarwa Iithete Senior Secondary School. Mpungu Constituency
Mpungu is a constituency in the Kavango West region of Namibia. It had a population of 20,787 in 2011, up from 18,660 in 2001, and 9,121 registered voters in 2020, up from 8,924 in 2004. The settlements of Mpungu and Mukekete are situated in this constituency. Before August 2013 the town of Nkurenkuru belonged to Mpungu constituency, and the constituency was situated in the Kavango Region. Following a recommendation of the ''Fourth Delimitation Commission of Namibia'', and in preparation of the 2014 general election, the Kavango Region was split into Kavango East and Kavango West. Nkurenkuru Constituency was created from the area of Mpungu. Both constituencies belong to Kavango West. Politics As in all Kavango West constituencies, SWAPO won the 2015 regional election by a landslide. Each of the 14 regions of Namibia is further subdivided into electoral constituencies. The size of the constituencies varies with the size and population of each region. There are currently 121 constituencies in Namibia. The most populous constituency according to the 2011 census was Rundu Urban in the Kavango West region with 63,431 people; the least populous was Okatyali in the Oshana region with 3,187 people. The administrative division of Namibia is tabled by ''Delimitation Commissions'' and accepted or declined by the National Assembly. In 1992, the First Delimitation Commission chaired by Judge President Johan Strydom determined the number of constituencies to be 95. Since then, every Delimitation Commission has increased this number to accommodate population growth. Kavango West
Kavango West is one of the fourteen regions of Namibia. Its capital and only self-governed settlement is Nkurenkuru, its governor is Sirkka Ausiku. The Region was created in 2013 when the Kavango Region was split into Kavango East and Kavango West. In the north, Kavango West borders the Cuando Cubango Province of Angola. Nkurenkuru
Nkurenkuru (1.093 m above sea level) is a town on the south-western banks of the Kavango River. It is the capital of the Kavango West Region of northern Namibia, located west of Rundu. It is also a former Mission (station), mission station of the Finnish Missionary Society. Nkurenkuru has a population of around 618 (in 2011) inhabitants and is homestead of the local Uukwangali kings and until 1936, also was capital for the entire region. Then the seat of the regional government was moved to Rundu, due to its strategically more central location. In 2013 it became a regional capital again, of the then-created Region of Kavango West. Nkurenkuru is the smallest town in Namibia, and the only self-governed settlement in the Region of Kavango West. Namibia uses regions as its first-level subnational administrative divisions. Since 2013, it has 14 regions which in turn are subdivided into 121 constituencies. Upon Namibian independence, the pre-existing subdivisions from the South African administration were taken over. Since then, demarcations and numbers of regions and constituencies of Namibia are tabled by delimitation commissions and accepted or declined by the National Assembly. In 1992, the ''1st Delimitation Commission'', chaired by Judge President Johan Strydom, proposed that Namibia should be divided into 13 regions. Okongo
Okongo is a village in the Ohangwena Region of northern Namibia. It is situated about east of Eenhana on the tarred road to Nkurenkuru. It is the district capital of Okongo Constituency. History Okongo was first settled by the San people in the 1900s, who, as a hunter-gatherer community, found the local abundance of wildlife and fruit attractive in the village. The name ''Okongo'' derives from the Oshiwambo word meaning: ''a place or a forest for hunting''. The San were eventually displaced in Okongo by the immigration of Bantu people. Today the commonly spoken language in the area is Oshiwambo and Christianity is the predominant religion. Tsintsabis
Tsintsabis is a settlement of about 4,000 inhabitants in the Oshikoto Region of Namibia. It is situated northeast of Tsumeb and belongs to the Guinas electoral constituency. The settlement features a clinic and a police station. Tsintsabis is not a proclaimed settlement. It is situated on farm land, some of which has been obtained by government to resettle landless people. The area is inhabited predominantly by San people but also by Damara, Ovambo and people from the Kavango Region. Development and infrastructure The place is riddled with poverty and alcohol abuse. Apart from farms surrounding the settlement there are no job opportunities such that many of the residents live on government handouts. Tsintsabis Combined School is the only school in the area.
