Moïse Plante
Moïse Plante (1830 – March 18, 1892) was a merchant and political figure in Quebec. He represented Beauharnois (provincial electoral district), Beauharnois in the Legislative Assembly of Quebec in 1892 as a Conservative Party of Quebec (historical), Conservative member. He was the son of Arthur Plante. Plante served as mayor of Valleyfield, Quebec, Valleyfield from 1875 to 1878 and from 1880 to 1889. He married Hermine Bergevin. Plante was elected to the Quebec assembly in 1892 but died at Valleyfield without ever taking his seat. His son Arthur Plante, Arthur and his nephews Célestin Bergevin and Achille Bergevin were also elected to represent Beauharnois in the Quebec assembly. Legislative Assembly Of Quebec
The Legislative Assembly of Quebec (French: ''Assemblée législative du Québec'') was the name of the lower house of Quebec's legislature from 1867 to December 31, 1968, when it was renamed the National Assembly of Quebec. At the same time, the upper house of the legislature, the Legislative Council, was abolished. Both were initially created by the Constitution Act, 1867. It was the Union Nationale government of Premier Jean-Jacques Bertrand that passed the "Bill 90" legislation to abolish the upper house, but earlier attempts had been made by earlier governments. The presiding officer of the Assembly was known in French as ''orateur'', a literal translation of the English term, ''speaker''. When the Assembly was renamed so too was the title of its presiding officer, becoming known as the President. Today, Quebec has a unicameral legislature, whose single house is the National Assembly. Beauharnois (provincial Electoral District)
Beauharnois is a provincial electoral district in the Montérégie region of Quebec, Canada that elects members to the National Assembly of Quebec. The district notably include the city of Salaberry-de-Valleyfield. It was created in 2001 from parts of Beauharnois-Huntingdon, Châteauguay and Salaberry-Soulanges. In the change from the 2001 to the 2011 electoral map, its territory was unchanged. An earlier version of the Beauharnois electoral district had been created for the 1867 election (and an electoral district of that name existed earlier in the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada and the Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada). Its last election was in 1985. It disappeared in the 1989 election and its successor electoral district was Beauharnois-Huntingdon. Élie-Hercule Bisson
Élie-Hercule Bisson (July 7, 1833 – May 28, 1907) was a notary and political figure in Quebec. He represented Beauharnois in the Legislative Assembly of Quebec from 1873 to 1878, from 1886 to 1892 and from 1892 to 1889 as a Liberal member. He was born in Saint-Rémi, Lower Canada, the son of Alexis Bisson and Esther Lonctin. Bisson was educated at the Collège de Montréal and, after articling as a notary, was admitted to practice in 1860. He practised at Saint-Louis-de-Gonzague from 1860 to 1876. In 1861, he married Virginie Rapin. He was recorder for the town of Beauharnois, secretary for Beauharnois County and served as mayor of Beauharnois in 1894 and 1895. Bisson was a director for the Beauharnois Junction Railway. He was first elected to the Quebec assembly in an 1873 by-election held following the death of George-Étienne Cartier. The Conservative Party of Quebec (french: Parti conservateur du Québec) was a political party in Quebec, Canada, from 1867 until 1936, when it merged with members of the Action libérale nationale to form the Union Nationale. Origins The party originated as the '' Parti bleu'' which was formed around 1850. The ''parti bleu'' opposed the anti-clericalism of its rival, the ''parti rouge''. The ''parti bleu'' supported the role of the clergy in Quebec society. Members of the ''parti bleu'', led by George-Étienne Cartier from Canada East, joined with the followers of Sir John A. Macdonald in Canada West to form a coalition government with Cartier as co-premier from 1857 to 1862. Arthur Plante
Arthur Plante, (September 29, 1869 – January 31, 1927) was a lawyer and political figure in Quebec. He represented Beauharnois in the Legislative Assembly of Quebec from 1898 to 1900, from 1908 to 1912 and from 1923 to 1927 as a Conservative member. He was born in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, Quebec, the son of Moïse Plante and Hermine Bergevin, and was educated in Valleyfield, at the Jesuit College in Montreal and at the Université Laval. Plante articled in law, was admitted to the Quebec bar in 1894 and practised in the Montreal and Beauharnois regions. In 1909, he was named King's Counsel. Plante was president of the Valleyfield Chamber of Commerce. He was first elected to the Quebec assembly in an 1898 by-election held after Élie-Hercule Bisson accepted an appointment as prothonotary. Salaberry-de-Valleyfield is a city in southwestern Quebec, Canada, in the Regional County Municipality of Beauharnois-Salaberry. The population as of 2019 was 42,410. Situated on Grande-Île, an island in the Saint Lawrence River, it is bordered at its western end by Lake Saint Francis, with the Saint Lawrence to the north and the Beauharnois Canal to its south. The Port of Valleyfield is on the canal. The historic downtown is a major touristic centre for the area. Célestin Bergevin
Célestin Bergevin (September 7, 1832 – July 17, 1910) was a farmer and political figure in Quebec. He represented Beauharnois in the Legislative Assembly of Quebec from 1867 to 1871 and from 1878 to 1886 as a Conservative member. He was born in Saint-Timothée, Lower Canada, the son of Pierre Bergevin and Angélique Mercier. Bergevin was mayor of Saint-Clément-de-Beauharnois from 1878 to 1882. He was also a justice of the peace and harbour master for Valleyfield. In 1857, he married Marie Salomae May. Bergevin was defeated by George-Étienne Cartier when he ran for reelection in 1871, also losing by-elections in 1873 and 1875. He was successful in 1878 and 1881 but defeated again in 1886. Bergevin died in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield at the age of 77. Achille Bergevin
Achille Bergevin (3 March 1870 – 16 April 1933) was a Canadian politician in the province of Quebec. Born in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, Quebec, the son of Gilbert Bergevin and Marie Daoust, Bergevin was educated at the Commercial Academy of Varennes. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Quebec for the electoral district of Beauharnois in the 1900 election. A Liberal, he was re-elected in 1904 and was defeated in 1908. He was appointed to the Legislative Council of Quebec for the Repentigny division in 1910. He resigned in 1913 and was re-appointed for the De Salaberry division. He resigned in 1914, after allegations were made against him by the ''Montreal Daily Mail''. He was re-elected to the Legislative Assembly in 1919 and was defeated in 1923.
